     The Led 5mm Red Green Common Cathode is a 3 pin bicolor LED diode with one red and one green LED inside a single 5mm clear body. The cathode (negative) terminals of the two LEDs are joined in the common pin; the anode (positive) terminals of red and green come out on separate pins. This way red, green, or both together for an orange-yellow tone can be lit at the same point, and a single hole in the panel is enough instead of two separate LEDs.

     Each color works with a forward voltage of approximately 2.0V - 2.2V and a current of 15mA - 20mA. Red has a wavelength of 620nm - 626nm, green 565nm - 570nm (yellowish green). The clear lens concentrates the light in a narrow angle; the LED looks colorless when off and its color is distinct when lit. Thanks to the common cathode structure, the common pin is connected to GND and the colors are driven from two separate outputs of the control board or from two separate switches.

     Always drive the led with a limiting resistor such as 1K ohm. If you power it directly, it will be damaged immediately. It is suitable for two state indicators such as charging and battery status indicators, device ready / fault lights, traffic light and model train signal models.

Usage information:

• Connect the common cathode pin to GND. Fit a separate limiting resistor to each of the red and green anode pins and connect them to two separate outputs of the control board or to a switch. Do not share a single resistor between the two colors.
• Before connecting, find which pin is the common cathode and which is red or green using the diode range of a multimeter or by trying with a 3V battery and a 1K ohm resistor: with the common pin on the negative, the other two pins are tried one by one.
• Resistor value: (supply voltage - LED voltage) / current. For example, at a 5V supply 1K ohm gives approximately 3mA, which is enough for an indicator light; for a brighter light the resistor is reduced so that the current does not exceed 20mA.

Precautions:

•  Always drive the led with a limiting resistor such as 1K ohm. If you power it directly, it will be damaged immediately.
•  This product is common cathode: the common pin is connected to GND. It does not light in a circuit designed for common anode (common pin connected to positive).
•  Give at most 20mA per color; when both colors are lit together the total current flows through the common pin.
•  The LED does not light if connected in reverse; do not apply a high reverse voltage.
•  Do not bend the pins too close to the body and do not keep the soldering iron on a pin for a long time; the body and internal connections may be damaged by heat.
