     The Plato 170 is a shear type flush cut side cutter from the Plato brand. It cuts soft copper wire up to 1mm (18 AWG) and medium hard wire up to 0.8mm. The cut face is flat; after soldering it trims the component leads protruding from the circuit board close to the board surface without leaving a sharp point. "MODEL 170" and a maximum 1mm copper wire warning are printed on its handles.

     Its overall length is 130mm, its width with the handles open is 77mm, the handle length is 95mm and the jaw opening is 6mm. Thanks to its thin, pointed head it is easy to use on densely populated boards and in tight corners; it rests on a flat surface at a 21 degree approach angle and cuts close to the board surface. After each cut a hidden spring opens the handles by itself; the blue soft plastic coated handles do not slip and do not tire the hand during long use.

     It is used in electronics assembly and repair, lead trimming after soldering, cutting thin cables and wires, separating model kit parts from the sprue, and jewelry work. It is for soft wire and plastic only; it is not used on steel wire, piano wire or hard materials.

Usage information:

• When trimming a component lead, turn the flat face of the cutter towards the board, the side that stays; with the flat face on the board side the lead is cut flat and close to the board surface.
• Place the wire in the middle or near the root of the jaw and cut in one motion; cutting thick wire with the very tip of the jaw strains the tips.
• After the cut release the handles, the hidden spring opens the cutter by itself; repeated trimming can be done with one hand.
• Store the cutter in a dry place; keep it apart from other metal tools so that the jaw does not get dull.

Precautions:

•  The cutting tips are very sharp. Wearing protection such as gloves and glasses is recommended during use ("USE SAFETY GLASSES" is printed on the handle).
•  Cut pieces fly off. They can harm people or electronic circuits; pay attention to the direction of the piece that comes off during the cut.
•  Do not cut copper wire thicker than 1mm, steel wire, piano wire or hard material; the jaw gets nicked or breaks.
•  This product is not a gripping and bending tool like long nose pliers. High pressure and bending wear the sharp tips.
•  Do not cut live (energized) cables; the handle coating is not meant for electrical insulation.
•  Touching the blades by hand causes cuts and punctures. Keep out of reach of children.
