Dip20 Converter Pcb for Soic20 and Ssop20 ICs

     The SOSS20 PCB is a blank adapter board used to convert SO20 (SOIC20) and SSOP20 package SMD ICs with up to 20 leads into DIP form. One side of the board has an SO20 pad with 1.27mm (50mil) lead pitch and the other side has an SSOP20 pad with 0.65mm (25mil) lead pitch; by choosing the side that matches the lead pitch of the IC, two different packages can be used with a single board. There are 10 holes with 2.54mm (100mil) pitch on each side of the board, so after the IC is soldered the board can be plugged into a breadboard, a perfboard or a DIP socket.

     The board is a first class double sided FR4 PCB made by ExpKits and measures 21mm x 26mm. The SO20 side carries the print "EXPKITS SO20" and the SSOP20 side "EXPKITS SS20"; the dot at the corner of the SO20 pad block and the notch in the body outline on the SS20 side show the pin 1 direction of the IC. The two hole rows are approximately 15.24mm (600mil) apart, so the board follows the wide DIP20 layout and sits easily on both sides of the breadboard centre channel.

Usage information:

• Choose the side that matches the lead pitch of the IC (SO20 for 1.27mm, SS20 for 0.65mm). Place the IC with pin 1 towards the dot or notch on the board, first solder two diagonal corner leads and check the alignment, then solder the remaining leads.
• For a breadboard or socket, solder 2.54mm male pin headers into the 10 holes on each side; mind the pin 1 direction when plugging the board in.
• If bridges form on the 0.65mm pitch SSOP leads, apply flux and remove the excess solder with desoldering braid.

Precautions:

•  The pads on both sides lead to the same 20 holes; solder an IC on only one side of the board, if ICs are soldered on both sides at the same time their leads are connected to each other.
•  The two hole rows are approximately 600mil apart; the board does not fit a narrow (300mil) DIP20 socket and does not replace a 300mil DIP20 IC.
•  A 1.27mm pitch SO IC does not fit the SS20 side and a 0.65mm pitch SSOP IC does not fit the SO20 side; check the lead pitch of the IC in its datasheet before soldering.
•  Do not heat the small pads for long; use a fine tip soldering iron and flux, excessive heat can lift the pad.
