     Kapton Tape 20mm x 30 Meters is an amber, heat resistant tape made of polyimide film with silicone adhesive on one side. It is used continuously between -73C and 260C and withstands about 280C for a short time; it does not melt, flow or fade at soldering, hot air and oven temperatures. The 20mm width covers enough surface in one pass for PCB masking, cable and coil wrapping and insulating battery packs.

     Thanks to its thin structure (about 0.05mm) it lies flat on the parts and does not add thickness. The silicone adhesive holds at high temperature and leaves no residue on the surface when peeled off after the job. With its high insulation capability, tear and break resistance and solvent resistance it is used in electronic repair, as masking in wave soldering and oven processes and as insulation in transformer and motor windings.

Usage information:

• Clean the surface of dust, oil and solder paste residue and dry it; keep the tape taut, stick it flat on the surface and press it so that no air bubbles remain.
• For masking, stick the tape over the area to be protected (gold plated connector fingers, sensor, hole) before the soldering, coating or hot air process; after the process is finished and the part has cooled down, peel the tape off slowly.
• For insulation, wrap the cable joint, coil or battery connection with at least one overlapping turn; at corners cut the tape and use a new piece instead of folding it.

Points to consider:

•  The continuous operating temperature is 260C; do not keep the tape in contact with an open flame or a soldering iron tip for a long time.
•  The tape does not conduct electricity; it cannot be used for shielding or grounding.
•  The adhesive does not hold fully on oily, dusty or damp surfaces; clean the surface before applying.
•  If the tape is pulled while still hot during the process it may tear; wait for the part to cool down.
•  Polyimide does not withstand long contact with strong alkaline (base, caustic) solutions; do not use it where such chemical contact occurs.
