Wiznet W5500 Mini Ethernet Module
5V SPI TCP/IP UDP Network Lan Communication Internet Iot Control Data Transfer
This module adds a wired Ethernet connection to your microcontroller with the WIZnet W5500 chip. The W5500 contains a hardwired TCP/IP stack running the TCP, UDP, ICMP, IPv4, ARP, IGMP and PPPoE protocols, a 10/100Mbps Ethernet physical layer (PHY) and 32KB of buffer memory. Since the network protocols run inside the chip, network communication is done only by writing and reading data over SPI, without loading complicated Ethernet software onto the microcontroller. Up to 8 independent sockets (connections) can be opened at the same time.
The board is approximately 55mm x 28mm. It carries the W5500 chip, a 25MHz crystal, an RJ45 socket with magnetics, a power LED and a 3.3V regulator. When the board is powered from the 5V pin, the onboard regulator produces 3.3V; if a 3.3V supply is available, it is connected directly to the 3.3V pin. The signal inputs are 5V tolerant, so it can be connected to control boards with 3.3V and 5V logic levels without a level shifter. Connections are made through a 2x5 (10 pin) 2.54mm male pin header.
Since it can be used with almost any microcontroller that has an SPI interface, it is suitable for adding a wired network connection to web servers, MQTT and Modbus connected data logging, remote monitoring and home automation devices. A wired network is preferred where Wifi is weak or an uninterrupted connection is required.
Key features:
Hardwired TCP/IP stack: The TCP, UDP, ICMP, IPv4, ARP, IGMP and PPPoE protocols run inside the W5500 chip; the processor load and memory of the microcontroller are not spent on network software.
8 sockets, 32KB buffer: Up to 8 independent connections can be opened at the same time; incoming and outgoing data is held in the 32KB internal buffer memory.
Fast SPI connection: It communicates with the control board over SPI (mode 0 and 3); the W5500 supports an SPI clock of up to 80MHz. Only 4 signal lines (SCLK, MISO, MOSI, SCS) are needed.
5V or 3.3V supply: Thanks to the onboard regulator it can be powered from the 5V pin, or directly from the 3.3V pin; the signal inputs are 5V tolerant.
RJ45 socket with magnetics: The network cable plugs directly into the RJ45 socket on the board; the link and activity LEDs on the socket show the connection status.

Usage information:
- Connect the SCLK, MISO and MOSI pins of the module to the SPI pins of the control board, and the SCS pin to an output pin you choose on the control board. Connect the GNDs together. Connecting the RST and INT pins is optional; connecting RST to an output pin lets you restart the module by software.
- Supply power either from the 5V pin or from the 3.3V pin; do not supply both at the same time from different sources. If the 3.3V output of your control board cannot deliver 200mA, power the module from the 5V pin.
- The W5500 chip has no factory programmed MAC address; set the MAC address and IP settings (or DHCP) yourself in software. Every device on the same network must have a different MAC address.
Areas of use:
- Web server and control panel running over a wired network
- Sensor devices sending data to a server with MQTT
- Devices with Modbus TCP communication and PLC connections
- Data logging and recording devices
- Remote monitoring and control systems
- Home automation (relay, lighting, socket control)
- Greenhouse and agricultural monitoring stations
- Energy meter and panel monitoring devices
- Connecting door entry and access control devices to the network
- Wired internet connection where Wifi does not reach
Precautions:
- Apply the 5V supply only to the 5V pin. If 5V is applied to the 3.3V pin, the W5500 chip can be permanently damaged.
- The module draws typically 128mA - 132mA with a 100Mbps link; the power supply must be able to deliver more than 200mA. With insufficient supply the connection drops or the module restarts.
- This module is used over SPI and has the TCP/IP stack inside. RMII Ethernet PHY modules such as the LAN8720 only work with processors that have an Ethernet MAC; the two cannot replace each other.
- The W5500 does not support IPv6 or IP fragmentation.
- If other devices such as an SD card share the same SPI bus, each device must have its own SCS (CS) pin and the CS pin of the unused device must be kept inactive.
