433Mhz Lora RA-02 SX1278 Wireless Communication Module With Antenna
433 Mhz SX1278 Transceiver Long Range 0.5km/10km Water Electricity Gas Meter Wireless Sensor Temperature Data Monitoring Remote Control Telemetry Automation Robot Pump Electrical Control
The Ra-02 SX1278 DIP Module with Antenna is the Ai-Thinker Ra-02 LoRa module soldered onto an adapter board with 2.54mm pin pitch. The module contains the Semtech SX1278 transceiver chip and works in the 410-525MHz band centred on 433MHz; the metal shield is marked PA:+18dBm and ISM:410-525MHz. Thanks to the adapter board, the surface mount (SMD) Ra-02 plugs directly into a breadboard or a through-hole board, with no fine pad soldering.
The module connects to the microcontroller over SPI and is powered from 3.3V. With LoRa modulation it sends data over very long distances at low data rates: in open terrain with line of sight, communication up to 10km is possible (ideal conditions; between buildings and in built-up areas the range can drop to about 0.5km). Besides LoRa it also supports FSK, GFSK, MSK, GMSK and OOK modulation.
A 433MHz antenna with an IPEX (U.FL) connector cable comes fitted to the module. It suits battery powered devices that send little data but must reach far, such as meter reading, field and greenhouse sensors, alarms and remote controls.
Key features:
Long range: With LoRa modulation and receiver sensitivity down to -140dBm it communicates up to 10km in open terrain with line of sight; range depends on antenna height, obstacles and data rate settings.
Antenna included and fitted: The 433MHz antenna comes attached to the module with an IPEX connector; you can start communicating without searching for a separate antenna.
Breadboard friendly adapter board: The castellated SMD pads of the Ra-02 are brought out to a 2x4 pin adapter board with 2.54mm pitch; it works on a breadboard and on through-hole boards.
Low consumption: It draws about 12mA in receive mode and about 1.6mA in standby; suitable for battery powered sensor nodes.
Shielded module: The RF circuit sits under a metal shield; the power and band information is printed on the shield.

Pin description:
- 3.3V: Supply input (3.3V only)
- GND: Ground
- MISO: SPI data output
- MOSI: SPI data input
- SCK: SPI clock input
- NSS: SPI chip select input
- RST: Module reset input
- DIO0: Interrupt output (transmit done / packet received)
Usage information:
- Connect the module to the SPI bus of the controller board: in addition to SCK, MISO, MOSI, NSS and RST, connect DIO0 to an interrupt input. Supply is 3.3V; grounds must be common.
- Both communicating modules must use the same frequency, spreading factor (SF), bandwidth (BW) and coding rate; with different settings the modules will not hear each other.
- For long range, place the antenna vertically and as high as possible; metal enclosures and walls shorten the range. As the distance grows, choose a higher SF and a lower data rate.
Areas of use:
- Water, electricity and gas meter reading
- Field and garden irrigation control
- Greenhouse temperature and humidity monitoring
- Weather station data transfer
- Alarm and security sensors
- Remote control and pump control
- Telemetry and remote data collection
- Wireless sensor networks and IoT nodes
- Home automation and in-building wireless links
- Tank level and storage monitoring
Precautions:
- The module runs on 3.3V. Do not apply 5V to the 3.3V pin; when used with a 5V logic board, use a level shifter on the signal lines.
- Do not transmit (TX) without the antenna attached; the RF output may be damaged.
- This module is in the 433MHz band; it does not communicate with 868MHz or 915MHz LoRa modules. Use a 433MHz module at the other end as well.
- The 10km figure is the best case in open terrain, with line of sight and at low data rate; indoors and with obstacles the range is much shorter.
- Set the transmit power and frequency according to the radio regulations where you use it.
