Steel Sensor Housing 8x50mm Case
Temperature Heat Sensor Box Metal Tube Pipe D818b20 Ntc Lm35 PT100 Protective
The 8x50mm steel sensor head is a stainless steel tube with one end closed and the other end open, 8mm in outer diameter and 50mm long, used to protect temperature sensors against liquid, moisture, impact and other external effects. TO-92 sensors such as DS18B20 and LM35, as well as NTC thermistors and PT100 / PT1000 elements, are placed inside the sheath; the gap is filled with epoxy to make a solid and long lasting temperature probe.
The 8mm outer diameter gives a wider inner volume than the 6mm sheaths on our site. With an inner diameter of about 7.5mm, a TO-92 body sensor about 5mm wide enters the sheath easily; there is also room for the sleeving on the sensor legs, the cable and the epoxy filling. This makes it easier to build a probe with a thicker cable or sleeving. The thin metal wall transfers the ambient temperature to the sensor; the polished stainless surface resists oxidation.
It lets you build your own probe for thermostat projects that measure temperature in liquid or humid environments such as aquariums, incubators, greenhouses, fridges, pools, combi boilers and hot water tanks. If you need another length or diameter, 4x50mm, 5x30mm, 6x30mm, 6x50mm, 6x100mm, 6x120mm and 8x100mm options are also available on our site.
Key features:
Wide inner volume: 8mm outer and about 7.5mm inner diameter makes room for assemblies that are too tight in 6mm sheaths; a TO-92 sensor, sleeved legs and the cable fit together.
One end closed tube: The closed end goes into the liquid or medium to be measured, the sensor and cable are inserted from the open end; the open end is sealed with epoxy and heat shrink tubing.
Stainless steel protection: The polished stainless steel surface resists oxidation; it protects the sensor against impact, moisture and liquid.
Compatible with different sensors: Used with DS18B20, LM35, NTC thermistors and PT100 / PT1000 elements; one sheath type makes probes from different sensors.
Light with a thin wall: The thin metal wall of the tube, about 3gr in weight, conducts temperature to the sensor; the response speed depends mostly on the amount of filling inside.
Features:
- Product type: Stainless steel temperature sensor protective sheath with one end closed (thermowell)
- End structure: One end closed, the other end open for the sensor and cable entry
- Compatible sensors: DS18B20, LM35, NTC thermistor, PT100 / PT1000 element and other TO-92 temperature sensors
- Assembly: The sensor is placed inside the sheath and fixed by filling the gap with epoxy
- Protection: Protects the sensor against liquid, moisture, impact and external effects
- Heat transfer: The thin metal wall conducts the ambient temperature to the sensor
- Surface: Polished surface resistant to oxidation and rust
- Durability: The strong metal structure protects the sensor against impacts
- Wide sheath difference: Wider inner volume than 6mm sheaths; a TO-92 sensor, sleeved legs and the cable fit together
- Options: 4x50mm, 5x30mm, 6x30mm, 6x50mm, 6x100mm, 6x120mm and 8x100mm steel sensor heads are sold separately
- Operating temperature: The sheath itself withstands high temperature; the usable range is set by the sensor, cable and epoxy inside (for DS18B20 -55°C - +125°C)
- Shape: Cylindrical tube
- Material: Stainless steel
- Color: Gray (metal)
- Inner diameter: about 7.5mm
- Dimensions: 8mm x 50mm (outer diameter x length)
- Weight: about 3gr
Usage information:
- Solder the cable to the sensor legs and insulate each leg with separate sleeving or heat shrink tubing; the metal sheath is conductive, a bare leg touching the sheath causes a short circuit.
- Push the sensor to the very bottom of the sheath so that its measuring end reaches the closed end. In a wide sheath the sensor may not stay centered; rest its tip on the closed end and fill the gap with epoxy (with thermal paste for heat transfer if needed), then seal the open end with epoxy and heat shrink tubing.
- Place the finished probe with its closed end in the liquid or medium to be measured; since the sensor sits at the bottom of the sheath, the temperature is read through the thin metal wall at the closed end, and the open end where the cable exits can stay outside the medium.
Applications:
- Aquarium water temperature measurement and heater control
- Incubator temperature control
- Greenhouse and soil temperature measurement
- Fridge, deep freezer and cold room temperature monitoring
- Pool water temperature measurement
- Boiler, hot water tank and solar water heater
- Combi boiler and radiator pipe temperature monitoring
- Fermentation vessel outer surface and ambient temperature monitoring
- Thermostat and temperature control board projects
- Building waterproof temperature probes with thick cables
Precautions:
- The sheath alone is not waterproof. Before using it in liquid, seal the open end completely with epoxy and heat shrink tubing.
- The metal sheath conducts electricity. Do not insert the sensor legs and solder joints into the sheath without insulating them.
- The usable temperature is set by the sensor, cable insulation and epoxy inside, not by the sheath. Do not exceed the temperature limits of these materials.
- The 8mm sheath does not fit thermostats and devices with a 6mm probe socket. Check the size of the socket it will be mounted in beforehand.
- A wide sheath takes more filling material; this thermal mass slows the sensor's response to temperature changes somewhat compared with a bare sensor and a 6mm sheath.
- The steel grade (such as 304, 316) is not specified. Salt water (marine aquarium) and chlorinated pool water can cause pitting corrosion on stainless steel over time; check the sheath regularly in these environments.
- Suitability of the sheath and filling epoxy for contact with food and drinking water is not documented. Do not immerse the probe directly in food.
