3 Meter Cabled Waterproof DS18B20
Thermometer Heat Meter 1-Wire Dallas Aquarium Incubator Greenhouse Fridge Boiler Fermentation Solar Collector Datalogger Thermostat
The DS18B20 3 meter cable waterproof sensor is a ready-made temperature probe in which the DS18B20 digital temperature chip is placed inside a 6mm x 50mm stainless steel tip and extended with a 3 meter long 3 core cable. The metal tip is placed into water, soil or the medium to be measured; the board stays at a dry spot. The 3 meter cable is the mid-distance solution for applications such as aquariums, greenhouses, fridges, boilers and water tanks where the board sits in a cabinet or box and the measuring point is a few meters away. 1 meter versions for points very close to the board and 5 meter versions for farther points are available.
The DS18B20 chip inside the probe can measure between -55°C and +125°C (the usable range of the probe is limited by the PVC cable, see below), offers ±0.5°C accuracy between -10°C and +85°C and its resolution can be selected between 9 and 12 bits. The temperature value arrives digitally over the single Data wire. Since every chip has a unique factory-written 64 bit serial number, several probes can be connected to the same Data line and each one is read separately.
The chip sits inside the stainless steel tip; the transition between the tip and the cable is sealed with heat shrink tubing. The ends of the 3 core cable are stripped and tinned; the VCC, GND and Data cores are connected directly, it runs on a 3.0V - 5.5V supply and only one 4.7k pull-up resistor is needed for the Data line. Because the cable is PVC jacketed, the operating temperature limit (Precautions section) must be observed.
Key features:
Suited to mid distances: The 3 meter cable lets you keep the board in a dry box and reach a measuring point a few meters away; it suits aquarium, greenhouse, fridge and boiler setups where 1 meter is not enough and 5 meters is too much.
Goes into water and soil: The chip is inside a 6mm x 50mm stainless steel tip and the tip-to-cable transition is sealed with heat shrink tubing; the tip can be immersed in water, soil or liquid.
Calibration-free digital reading: The temperature value arrives directly in digital form; it offers ±0.5°C accuracy between -10°C and +85°C (chip manufacturer data) and 0.0625°C steps at 12 bits, no analog measurement or calibration is needed.
Several probes on one line: Each probe has a unique 64 bit address; several probes can be connected to the same Data line and read separately from a single pin.
Works with 3.3V and 5V: Thanks to the 3.0V - 5.5V supply range it is used with both 3.3V and 5V logic boards.

- Dimensions: probe tip 6mm diameter x 50mm length (the part of the metal tube near the cable is under the heat shrink tubing)
- Weight: about 60gr
Usage information:
- Connect the VCC wire to the 3.3V or 5V supply, the GND wire to the board's GND and the Data wire to a digital pin of the board. In the red / yellow / green batch shown in the product image red is VCC, yellow is GND and green is Data; since some batches swap yellow and green, check the wires of the sensor you received with a multimeter before connecting.
- Connect a 4.7k pull-up resistor between the Data line and the board's logic voltage: 5V on Arduino Uno/Nano, 3.3V on ESP32, ESP8266 and Raspberry Pi (also power the sensor from 3.3V on these boards; a Data line pulled up to 5V can damage a 3.3V pin). Without the resistor the sensor cannot be read (-127°C is shown).
- On a 3 meter cable a 4.7k pull-up is enough in most cases. If readings are unstable (occasional -127°C or a constant 85°C power-up value), keep any extra cable you add between the board and the sensor short; if needed, replace the pull-up resistor with 3.3k.
- Choose the resolution to suit your needs: a measurement with 0.0625°C steps at 12 bits takes at most 750ms, at 9 bits at most 93.75ms; do not set the reading interval shorter than this time.
- You can connect several sensors in parallel on the same Data line; a single pull-up resistor is enough and each sensor is read separately by its 64 bit address.
Areas of use:
- Aquarium and fish tank water temperature monitoring
- Incubator temperature control
- Greenhouse, soil and plant growing environment temperature
- Fridge, deep freezer and cold room monitoring
- Boiler and central heating flow / return pipe temperature (below 70°C)
- Water tank and piping temperature monitoring in solar collector systems (below 70°C; not inside the collector panel)
- Fermentation (beer, yoghurt, pickles) temperature monitoring
- Thermostat and home automation projects
- Datalogger and weather station (outdoor temperature)
- Room by room or shelf by shelf multi-point temperature network
Precautions:
- The chip measures up to 125°C, but the cable is PVC jacketed: do not use the probe in environments of 100°C and above (boiling water, oven, exhaust, hot surface). Only the metal tip should enter an environment above 70°C, the PVC cable must stay outside the hot area. Choose a silicone cable probe for higher temperatures.
- The PVC cable hardens below about -20°C; in very cold environments such as deep freezers fix the cable in place and do not bend it.
- Only the metal tip and the cable go into water. The open (stripped) ends of the cable and the connection point must stay in a dry place.
- The cable colour layout may vary by production batch (sellers show black, blue, yellow or green GND and yellow, white or green Data). To avoid reversing VCC and GND, check the colours of the sensor you received before connecting.
- Parasite power (VCC and GND both to ground, power taken from the data line) does not work reliably on long cables and with clone chips. Connect the VCC wire to a 3.0V - 5.5V supply and use the sensor in 3 wire mode.
