     The DS18B20 1 meter cable waterproof sensor is a ready temperature probe in which the DS18B20 digital temperature chip is placed inside a 6mm x 50mm stainless steel tip and extended with a 3 conductor cable of 1 meter length. The metal tip is placed into water, soil or the medium to be measured; the board stays nearby in a dry place. The 1 meter cable is enough for applications where the measuring point is close to the board, such as aquariums, incubators, fermentation vessels and fridges; there is no excess cable to coil up. A version with 5 meter cable is available for more distant measuring points.

     The DS18B20 chip inside the probe can measure between -55°C and +125°C (the usable range of the probe is limited by the PVC cable, see below), offers ±0.5°C accuracy between -10°C and +85°C, and its resolution is selectable between 9 and 12 bits. The temperature value comes digitally over a single Data wire. Since each chip has a unique factory programmed 64 bit serial number, more than one probe can be connected to the same Data line and each is read separately.

     The chip is inside the stainless steel tip; the transition between the tip and the cable is sealed with heat shrink tubing. The ends of the 3 conductor cable are stripped and tinned; the VCC, GND and Data conductors are connected directly, it works with a 3.0V - 5.5V supply and the Data line needs only one 4.7k pull-up resistor. As the cable is PVC jacketed, the operating temperature limit (Things to consider section) must be observed.

     Goes into water and soil: The chip is inside a 6mm x 50mm stainless steel tip and the tip to cable transition is sealed with heat shrink; the tip can be immersed in water, soil or liquid.

     Calibration-free digital reading: The temperature value comes directly in digital form; it offers ±0.5°C accuracy between -10°C and +85°C (chip manufacturer data) and 0.0625°C steps at 12 bits, no analog measurement or calibration is needed.

     Several probes on one line: Each probe has a unique 64 bit address; several probes are connected to the same Data line and read separately from a single pin.

     Suited to short distances: The 1 meter cable connects without leftover cable in incubator, aquarium and fridge setups where the board is close to the measuring point; at this distance the standard 4.7k pull-up resistor is enough.

     Works with 3.3V and 5V: Thanks to the 3.0V - 5.5V supply range it is used with both 3.3V and 5V logic boards.

Usage information:

• Connect the VCC wire to a 3.3V or 5V supply, the GND wire to the GND of the board and the Data wire to a digital pin of the board. In the batch shown in the product photos red is VCC, yellow is Data and black is GND; check the colors of the sensor you received before connecting.
• Connect a 4.7k pull-up resistor between the Data line and the logic voltage of the board: 5V on Arduino Uno/Nano, 3.3V on ESP32, ESP8266 and Raspberry Pi (on these boards also power the sensor from 3.3V; a Data line pulled up to 5V can damage a 3.3V pin). Without the resistor the sensor cannot be read (-127°C is shown).
• Choose the resolution you need: at 12 bits with 0.0625°C steps a measurement takes up to 750ms, at 9 bits up to 93.75ms; do not set the reading interval shorter than this time.
• You can connect several sensors in parallel to the same Data line; a single pull-up resistor is enough and each sensor is read separately by its 64 bit address.

Things to consider:

•  The chip measures up to 125°C, but the cable is PVC jacketed: do not use the probe at 100°C and above (boiling water, oven, exhaust, hot surface). Only the metal tip should enter an environment above 70°C; the PVC cable must stay outside the hot area. Choose a silicone cable probe for higher temperatures.
•  The PVC cable stiffens below about -20°C; in very cold places such as deep freezers, fix the cable and do not bend it.
•  Only the metal tip and the cable go into water. The open (stripped) ends of the cable and the connection point must stay in a dry place.
•  The cable color layout can change with the production batch (sellers show the Data conductor as yellow or white and GND as black or blue). To avoid reversing VCC and GND, check the colors of the sensor you received before connecting.
•  Parasitic power (VCC and GND both to ground, power from the data line) does not work reliably with clone chips. Connect the VCC wire to a 3.0V - 5.5V supply and use the sensor with 3 wires.
