     The metal 2.1mm DC power socket (DC099) is a panel mount female DC jack for standard adapter plugs with 5.5mm outer diameter and 2.1mm inner pin. Thanks to its nickel plated metal body and knurled front head, it gives boxes, cases and front panels a solid and neat looking power input. The body is threaded; it is tightened from the back of the panel with a hex nut, and the spring washer prevents loosening under vibration.

     According to the majority of seller listings the rated load is DC 30V 5A; this makes it suitable for higher current projects than plastic DC sockets. It fits an 11mm panel hole. Connection is made by soldering wires to the solder lugs at the back: the centre pin and the outer sleeve are two separate poles.

     It is used as a 5V, 9V or 12V adapter input in LED lighting, routers, security camera recorders, amplifiers, charging circuits and robot projects. The service life given by the sellers is about 5000 insertions.

Usage information:

•  Drill an 11mm hole in the panel; insert the socket from the front and tighten it from the back with the spring washer and hex nut.
•  Connect the polarity according to the adapter: on most adapters the centre pin is positive (+) and the outer sleeve is negative (-). Check the polarity symbol on the adapter label before soldering.
•  After soldering the wires to the lugs, insulate them with heat shrink tubing and verify the polarity with a multimeter.

Precautions:

•  The socket is for 5.5mm x 2.1mm plugs; if a 5.5mm x 2.5mm plug is inserted, the inner pin does not make full contact and stays loose.
•  Do not use above 30V and 5A; at high current choose a wire cross section suitable for the current.
•  The metal body is usually connected to the outer sleeve lug (verify with a multimeter before mounting); on a metal panel the panel takes the polarity of the outer sleeve. With centre negative (-) adapters (e.g. effect pedal adapters) the outer sleeve is positive (+) and shorts on a grounded metal case; in that case insulate the socket from the panel or use the plastic DC-022 socket.
•  Do not heat the solder lug for a long time; the internal insulation of the socket may be damaged.
