5.5mm x 2.1mm Plastic DC Power Socket

     The plastic 2.1mm DC power socket (DC-022) is a panel mount female DC jack for adapter plugs with 5.5mm outer diameter and 2.1mm inner pin. Its black plastic body is threaded; it is tightened to the box or case panel from the back with a metal hex nut. Since the body is plastic, the socket body does not make an electrical connection with the panel when mounted on a metal panel.

     It has 3 solder lugs at the back: centre pin, outer sleeve and switch lug. When no plug is inserted the switch lug is connected to the outer sleeve, and this connection opens when the plug is inserted; this way circuits can be built that disconnect the internal battery or switch between adapter and battery when the plug is inserted. If only a power input is needed, the centre pin and outer sleeve lugs are enough.

     Most seller listings give the rated load as DC 30V 0.5A; some sellers state 1A - 3A. It is an economical solution for low and medium current electronic project boxes, toys, battery powered devices and small adapter inputs; for higher current projects the metal body DC099 socket is preferred.

Usage information:

•  Drill a hole of about 12mm in the panel; insert the socket from the front and tighten it from the back with the hex nut. Do not overtighten the nut.
•  Connect the polarity according to the adapter: on most adapters the centre pin is positive (+) and the outer sleeve is negative (-). Check the polarity symbol on the adapter label before soldering.
•  If switching between battery and adapter is needed, connect the negative (-) end of the battery to the switch lug; when the plug is inserted the battery is disconnected and the device is powered from the adapter.

Precautions:

•  The socket is for 5.5mm x 2.1mm plugs; if a 5.5mm x 2.5mm plug is inserted, the inner pin does not make full contact and stays loose.
•  Above the 0.5A rated current given by most sellers the contacts may heat up in continuous use; in projects drawing higher current prefer the metal DC099 socket (5A).
•  The plastic body is sensitive to heat; do not heat the solder lug for a long time, the body may soften and the contacts may shift.
•  Do not overtighten the nut; the plastic thread may be damaged.
