     The DS18B20 waterproof sensor with 5 meter cable is a ready-made temperature probe in which the DS18B20 digital temperature chip is placed inside a 6mm x 50mm stainless steel tip and extended with a 5m long 3-core cable. The metal tip and the cable are placed in water, soil or the medium to be measured, while the board stays at a dry and distant point. It is suitable for applications where the measuring point is far from the board, such as aquariums, incubators, greenhouses, fridges and pools.

     The DS18B20 chip inside the probe can measure between -55°C and +125°C (the usable range of the probe is limited by the PVC cable, see below), offers ±0.5°C accuracy between -10°C and +85°C, and its resolution can be selected between 9 and 12 bits. The temperature value arrives digitally over the single Data wire. Since every chip has a unique factory-programmed 64 bit serial number, more than one probe can be connected to the same Data line and each one is read separately; this way the temperature of several points is monitored over one line.

     The chip is inside the epoxy-filled stainless steel tip; the tip-to-cable joint is sealed with heat shrink tubing. The ends of the 3-core cable are stripped and tinned; the VCC, GND and Data cores are connected directly, it runs on a 3.0V - 5.5V supply and the Data line needs only a single 4.7k pull-up resistor. Since the cable has a PVC jacket, the operating temperature limit (see Precautions) must be respected.

Usage information:

• Connect the VCC wire to the 3.3V or 5V supply, the GND wire to the board GND and the Data wire to a digital pin of the board. In the batch shown in the product photo red is VCC, yellow is GND and green is Data; check the colours of the sensor you received before connecting.
• Connect a 4.7k pull-up resistor between the Data line and the logic voltage of the board: 5V on Arduino Uno/Nano, 3.3V on ESP32, ESP8266 and Raspberry Pi (on these boards power the sensor from 3.3V too; a Data line pulled up to 5V can damage a 3.3V pin). Without the resistor the sensor cannot be read (-127°C is shown).
• If readings are unstable with the 5m cable (occasional -127°C or a constant 85°C power-on value), the pull-up resistor can be replaced with 3.3k or 2.2k, and any extra cable between the board and the sensor should be kept short.
• Choose the resolution you need: at 12 bits with a 0.0625°C step a measurement takes up to 750ms, at 9 bits up to 93.75ms; do not set the reading interval shorter than this time.
• You can connect several sensors in parallel to the same Data line; a single pull-up resistor is enough and each sensor is read separately by its 64 bit address.

Precautions:

•  The chip measures up to 125°C, but the cable has a PVC jacket: do not use the probe at 100°C and above (boiling water, oven, exhaust, hot surfaces). Only the metal tip may go into an environment above 70°C; the PVC cable (70°C class) must stay outside the hot area. For higher temperatures choose a probe with silicone cable.
•  The PVC cable stiffens below about -20°C; in very cold places such as deep freezers fix the cable in place and do not bend it.
•  Only the metal tip and the cable may go into water. The open (stripped) ends of the cable and the connection point must stay in a dry place.
•  The wire colour order may vary by production batch (sellers show black, blue, yellow or green GND and yellow, white or green Data). To avoid reversing VCC and GND, check the colours of the sensor you received before connecting.
•  Parasite power (VCC and GND both to ground, power taken from the data line) does not work reliably with the 5m cable and with clone chips. Connect the VCC wire to a 3.0V - 5.5V supply and use the sensor with 3 wires.
