ESP32-S3 N16R8 Wifi Bluetooth 5 Module
Esp32 32 Bit Dual Core 240Mhz 8MB Psram 16MB Flash External Antenna Ufl Socket 36 Gpio Usb Uart Spi I2c I2s Adc Touch Pwm
The ESP32-S3 N16R8 Module is an SMD (surface mount) wireless module built on the Espressif ESP32-S3 chip with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 (LE) connectivity. Its dual-core 32-bit Xtensa LX7 processor runs at up to 240MHz. N16R8 in its name shows that the module has 16MB Flash and 8MB PSRAM; thanks to this large memory, image processing, driving displays (LCD), audio and IoT applications with large web interfaces run comfortably. The module is used as a ready core module soldered onto the board by those who design their own boards.
On the Wi-Fi side 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n is supported; there is a data rate of up to 150Mbps, STA, AP and STA+AP modes, and ESP-NOW and Wi-Fi Mesh support. On the Bluetooth side Bluetooth 5 LE and Bluetooth Mesh are supported; there is no classic Bluetooth (BR/EDR). The module has both an onboard PCB antenna and a UFL (IPEX) antenna socket for connecting an external antenna; the antenna in use is selected by the R6 selection resistor next to the socket.
The ESP32-S3 chip contains USB 2.0 OTG Full-Speed and a USB Serial/JTAG unit; with a suitable board design the module can be connected to the computer directly over USB, programmed and debugged. It has rich peripherals such as SPI, UART, I2C, I2S, LCD and camera interface, TWAI (CAN), SD/MMC, ADC and capacitive touch input. It is programmed with Espressif ESP-IDF, Arduino and MicroPython.

Usage information:
- The module is SMD; it is used by soldering it onto your own board. Power it with a 3.3V regulator that can supply enough current and place decoupling capacitors next to the supply pins.
- For programming you can use the internal USB Serial/JTAG unit by connecting USB D- to GPIO19 and D+ to GPIO20, or a USB-serial converter over UART0 (TX/RX). To enter download mode the module is reset while GPIO0 is held low (GND).
- In the Arduino IDE select the "ESP32S3 Dev Module" board; set Flash Size to 16MB and PSRAM to "OPI PSRAM". In ESP-IDF esp32s3 is selected as the target.
Application areas:
- Smart home devices, smart plugs, relay and lighting control
- IoT sensor nodes and cloud connected data collection
- Image capture and image processing projects with the camera interface
- Control panels (HMI) with LCD and touch screen
- Robot and drone control boards
- Wearable and battery powered portable devices
- Industrial automation and TWAI (CAN) connected devices
- Audio recording, audio playback and voice assistant projects with I2S
- USB HID devices such as keyboards and mice with USB OTG
- Designing your own ESP32-S3 board and product prototypes
Points to consider:
- The module's supply voltage is 3.0V - 3.6V. Do not connect 5V directly; the GPIO pins are not 5V tolerant either.
- On the N16R8 version IO35, IO36 and IO37 are connected to the internal Octal PSRAM; do not use these pins in your design.
- The operating temperature of the R8 version with Octal PSRAM is -40°C - 65°C; this limit must be considered if it will be used in hotter environments.
- The module has SMD solder pads; it does not plug directly into a breadboard. Avoid overheating when soldering.
- If an external antenna will be used, choose an antenna suitable for the 2.4GHz band with a UFL (IPEX) connector and check that the R6 selection resistor is on the UFL socket path.
