So16 / Ssop16 to Dip Pcb
Dip16 Converter Pcb for Soic16 and Ssop16 ICs
The SOSS16 PCB is a bare adapter board used to convert SMD ICs in SO16 (SOIC16) and SSOP16 packages with up to 16 pins into DIP form. One side of the board has an SO16 footprint with 1.27mm (50mil) pin pitch, the other side an SSOP16 footprint with the 0.8mm (31.5mil) pin pitch given by the manufacturer; by choosing the side that matches the pitch of the IC, two different packages can be used with one board. Both edges of the board have 8 holes each at 2.54mm (100mil) pitch; after the IC is soldered, pin headers are fitted and the board is placed on a breadboard or perfboard.
The board is a first class double sided FR4 PCB made by ExpKits and measures 17mm x 21mm. The SO16 side is printed "EXPKITS SO16" and the SSOP16 side "EXPKITS SS16"; the notch in the body outline on the SO16 side shows the pin 1 direction of the IC. The two rows of holes are approximately 12.7mm (500mil) apart, so the board has a wide DIP16 layout; it sits across the center channel of a breadboard. The SOSS20 PCB for 20 pin ICs is a separate product; the SOSS16 is a smaller board.
Key features:
Two packages, one board: One side has an SO16 footprint with 1.27mm pitch, the other an SSOP16 footprint with 0.8mm pitch; you use the side that matches your IC package.
16 hole DIP output: 8 holes on each side at 2.54mm pitch bring all 16 pins out to standard pin header spacing.
Small board: With its 17mm x 21mm size it takes little space on the breadboard; the rows next to it stay free for connections.
Double sided FR4 board: A first class double sided FR4 board as stated by the manufacturer ExpKits; the footprints on both sides connect to the same 16 holes.

- Dimensions: 17mm x 21mm
Usage information:
- Measure the pin pitch of the IC: an IC with 1.27mm pitch is soldered to the SO16 side, an IC with 0.8mm pitch to the SS16 side. ICs with fewer than 16 pins (SO8, SO14) can also be soldered to part of the pads.
- Align the IC on the pads according to the pin 1 marking, solder two corner pins first to fix the position, then solder the other pins. If bridges remain between pins, clean them with desoldering braid.
- After soldering the IC, fit and solder pin headers into the 8 holes on each side; place the board across the center channel of a breadboard or on a perfboard.
Applications:
- Shift register ICs: using SO16 ICs such as the 74HC595 on a breadboard
- Multiplexer ICs: 16 pin analog multiplexers such as the CD4051 / 74HC4051
- USB serial converter ICs: test circuits with SOP16 ICs such as the CH340G
- RS232 level converter ICs: MAX232 / MAX3232 in narrow body SO16 package
- Driver ICs: relay and stepper motor drivers such as the ULN2003
- Perfboard circuits: moving SMD ICs to perfboard
- Experiment setups: school and laboratory work
- Breadboard measuring and testing of small 0.8mm pitch SSOP16 ICs
- Smd IC trials: trying and comparing desoldered ICs
Precautions:
- The two rows of holes are approximately 12.7mm (500mil) apart, so the board does not fit a standard narrow (300mil) DIP16 socket or DIP16 IC footprint.
- Both sides of the board connect to the same 16 holes; solder an IC to only one side of a board.
- According to the manufacturer the SS16 side is for 0.8mm pin pitch. Most SSOP16 / TSSOP16 ICs on the market have 0.65mm pitch; with these ICs the two ends of a row of 8 pins are offset by approximately 1mm and the pins do not sit on the pads. Check the pin pitch of the IC beforehand.
- The SO16 side is for narrow body (approximately 3.9mm) ICs; the pins of a wide body (approximately 7.5mm, SO16W / SOIC16W) IC fall outside the pads.
- Place the IC according to the pin 1 marking; an IC soldered the wrong way round can be damaged when powered.
