AC DC 220V to 5V Voltage Step Down Module Isolated Electronic Circuit Power Supply Smps Transformer

     The HLK-5M05, made by Hi-Link, is a small switching (SMPS) power module that converts 100V - 240V AC mains voltage into an isolated 5V DC output and is soldered onto a circuit board. Its output is 5V, 1A, 5W. The black case of 38mm x 23mm x 18mm has 2 AC input pins on one side and the +Vo and -Vo output pins on the other; it provides a 5V supply inside a 220V device without a separate adapter.

     There is 3000V AC isolation between input and output; the output is isolated from the mains. Its ripple and noise is 50mV p-p and its efficiency is 70% at 230V AC input and full load. It has short circuit and overcurrent protection; once the fault is removed, the module restarts by itself. It is used to create a 5V rail in mains powered control circuits such as smart plugs, relay boards, timers, thermostats and wireless switches.

Usage information:

• Solder the module onto the circuit board by its pins. Connect the live and neutral lines of the mains to the two AC pins; put a 1A 250V AC slow blow (time delay) fuse on the live line. Take the 5V output from the +Vo (positive) and -Vo (negative) pins.
• Leave enough clearance on the board between the AC lines and the 5V lines; keep the mains tracks apart from the low voltage tracks.
• Keep the output current below 1A. In circuits where the load draws peak current (relay, wireless module), adding an electrolytic capacitor at the output reduces voltage dips.

Things to consider:

•  The input pins of the module carry 220V mains voltage; it is life threatening. Make the connection with the power off and do not touch the running circuit. Users without mains wiring knowledge should consult an electrician.
•  Always put a 1A 250V AC slow blow fuse on the input side (manufacturer recommendation); in case of a fault the fuse cuts the mains line.
•  The output gives at most 5W (5V, 1A). For loads drawing more current (motor, multi-channel relay, long LED strip) use a stronger power supply.
•  The module warms up while running; leave ventilation in a closed box and do not operate it outside the -20°C to +60°C range.
