SIEMENS USB to MPI / DP PPI PC Adapter S7 200 / 300 / 400 PLC Programmer

     This PC adapter is an isolated programming adapter compatible with 6ES7972-0CB20-0XA0 that connects the USB port of a computer to the 9-pin MPI / DP / PPI programming port of Siemens PLCs. It communicates with S7-300 and S7-400 PLCs over MPI / DP and with S7-200 PLCs over PPI; it is used for program upload, download, online monitoring and fault diagnosis. The housing carries the text "PC ADAPTER USB 6ES7 972-0CB20-0XA0 USB to MPI/DP/PPI" and MPI, Power and USB status LEDs.

     The adapter works with the original Siemens driver and does not create a virtual COM port on the computer; with STEP 7 V5.5 and later the driver comes with the software and no separate installation is needed. Like the original, the signal path is isolated with high-speed optocouplers; a resettable PTC fuse protects the internal circuit against overvoltage, overcurrent and short circuit. It supports all MPI rates from 9600bps up to 1.5Mbps and adapts automatically to the MPI port rate.

     The adapter has a USB-B socket; it connects to the computer with the supplied USB cable and to the programming port of the PLC or of an MPI/DP Siemens operator panel with the DB9 connection cable. It can also be used for 840D CNC system programming and in S7-200 DP networks built with EM277.

Key features:

     Three PLC families in one adapter: Communicates with S7-300 / S7-400 over MPI / DP and with S7-200 over PPI; the same adapter connects to different generations of Siemens PLCs.

     Original Siemens driver: Does not create a COM port; it is selected as PC Adapter in the "Set PG/PC Interface" list of STEP 7 and TIA Portal; no separate driver is installed with STEP 7 V5.5 and later.

     Optical isolation and protection: The signal path is isolated with optocouplers; a resettable PTC fuse protects the internal circuit in case of overvoltage, overcurrent and short circuit. Noise on the field side is not carried to the USB port of the computer.

     Operator panel support: Used for project download and backup on Siemens panels with MPI/DP port (such as TP170A, TP177A, TP177B, OP177B, MP277, MP377).

     Status LEDs: The MPI, Power and USB LEDs on the housing show the state of the connection and communication; connection problems are identified quickly in the field.

Usage information:

• Connect the adapter to the computer with the USB cable and to the MPI / DP (PPI on S7-200) port of the PLC with the DB9 connection cable. The Power LED should light.
• In STEP 7 or TIA Portal (STEP 7-Micro/WIN for S7-200) select the PC Adapter interface in "Set PG/PC Interface"; choose the MPI profile for S7-300 / S7-400, PROFIBUS for a Profibus network and PPI for S7-200. Keep the MPI rate the same as the rate set in the PLC or use automatic detection.
• On a computer with STEP 7 V5.5 or later the driver is installed automatically. With older software, or if the driver is not found, use the driver link on the product page.

Precautions:

•  This product is an adapter compatible with Siemens 6ES7972-0CB20-0XA0; it is not an original Siemens product.
•  Pins 2 and 7 of the DB9 port are the 24V supply lines of the PLC. Do not apply external voltage to the DB9 pins and do not force the cable in or out while the PLC is powered.
•  Install the programming software (STEP 7 / TIA Portal; STEP 7-Micro/WIN for S7-200) before connecting the adapter to the computer; the driver comes with this software. On newer Windows versions check the Windows compatibility of the software.
•  The adapter does not work with RS232 / COM port based programs; it works only with software that uses the Siemens PC Adapter interface.
