13.56Mhz RFID Reader Module
Mini Nfc Magnetic Tag Card Reader Personnel Tracking Door Entry Control Counter Portable Handheld Device Rfid
RC522 Module is a standard blue RFID reader / writer board of approximately 40mm x 60mm with an MFRC522 chip, operating at 13.56MHz. Thanks to the printed antenna that covers most of the board, it reads Mifare S50 cards and key tags contactlessly up to approximately 50mm; it can write data to cards and read and change their sectors. It works with ISO14443A Mifare S50 (1K), S70 (4K) and Ultralight cards.
The module is powered with 3.3V; it draws 13mA - 26mA when operating, 10mA - 13mA in standby and less than 80uA in sleep. It connects to the controller board over the SPI interface (up to 10Mbit/s); the 8 pin 2.54mm connection order is SDA, SCK, MOSI, MISO, IRQ, GND, RST, 3.3V. Besides the reader module, the package contains a white 13.56MHz card, a blue key tag and two pin headers, one straight and one 90 degree angled; the headers are not soldered, one of them is chosen and soldered according to the mounting.
It is widely used in systems that need card identification such as door access control, personnel tracking (attendance), turnstiles, smart locks, membership and counter applications. Its antenna is larger than that of mini RC522 modules; it suits box and panel mounting where a longer reading distance is needed.
Key features:
Reads and writes: It does not only read the card number (UID); it writes data to the sectors of Mifare S50 cards so that balance, points or permission information can be kept on the card itself.
Wide antenna: Most of the approximately 40mm x 60mm board is antenna; cards and key tags are read up to approximately 50mm and the reading point fits easily behind a panel.
Card and key tag included: The package contains a white 13.56MHz card and a blue key tag; reading and writing can be tried as soon as the module arrives.
Low consumption: Draws 13mA - 26mA when operating and less than 80uA in sleep; suitable for battery powered locks and handheld devices.
Fast SPI connection: Connects easily to the controller board with an SPI interface up to 10Mbit/s and an 8 pin 2.54mm connection; the IRQ pin can be used for interrupt based card detection.

Usage information:
- Connect the 3.3V pin to a 3.3V supply and GND to ground; connect the SCK, MOSI and MISO pins to the SPI bus of the controller board, and the SDA (SS) and RST pins to two separate digital pins. The IRQ pin can stay unconnected if interrupts are not used.
- Hold the card or key tag parallel to the antenna surface of the module and bring it closer; the best reading is when the card is near the centre of the antenna. Do not place the module on a metal surface or inside a metal box, the reading distance gets shorter.
- Solder the 90 degree angled pin header if the module will be mounted vertically, or the straight pin header for horizontal mounting or soldering onto perfboard.
Application areas:
- Door access control and card entry systems
- Personnel tracking and attendance devices
- Turnstile and parking barrier access
- Smart lock, cabinet and drawer lock
- Hotel room card entry trials
- Gym and club membership card reading
- Card based counter, balance and points applications
- Inventory, fixed asset and stock tag reading
- School and library card systems
- Card and key tag read / write trials
Things to consider:
- The supply and logic level of the module is 3.3V. Do not apply 5V to the 3.3V pin; the module may be permanently damaged. With 5V logic controller boards a level shifter on the signal lines is recommended.
- This module reads 13.56MHz cards; it does not read 125kHz (EM4100 etc.) cards. It is not a phone NFC pairing device or a bank card payment terminal.
- The UID in block 0 of the card is written at the factory and cannot be changed. When changing sector keys and access bits, record the new key; a wrongly written sector trailer (key) block can lock the sector permanently.
- The pin headers are not soldered; solder the header that suits your mounting before use. Do not apply heat or force to the antenna traces and the crystal while soldering.
