13.56Mhz RFID Reader Module V3
IIC SPI Uart Mini NFC Magnetic Wireless Card Tag Reader Personnel Tracking Door Entry Control Counter Portable Handheld Device Rfid
The PN532 NFC RFID Module V3 is a 13.56MHz reader writer board based on the NXP PN532 NFC controller. It reads and writes ISO14443A cards, key fobs and tags such as MIFARE Classic 1K/4K, MIFARE Ultralight, NTAG213/215/216 and DESFire without contact. Depending on the card type and the position of the card relative to the antenna, the reading distance is about 5cm - 7cm. In addition to reader / writer mode it also supports card emulation and peer-to-peer (P2P) communication between two NFC devices.
With the 2-position DIP switch on the board, I2C, SPI or HSU (high-speed UART) communication is selected; the same module connects to different boards with a suitable interface. It runs from a 3.3V - 5V supply; thanks to the on-board level shifter the I2C and UART lines are compatible with 5V TTL, while the SPI lines are 3.3V level. The antenna is printed on the PCB along the edge of the board; no separate antenna is needed. The red board measures about 42.7mm x 40.4mm and is screwed behind a door panel or box lid with its 2 mounting holes.
Key features:
Three interface options: Switch between I2C (address 0x24), SPI and HSU (115200 baud) with the DIP switch. There are separate pin rows: 4 pins for I2C and 8 pins for SPI.
Reads and writes: Writes data to the sectors of MIFARE Classic cards with your own key and writes NFC (NDEF) records to NTAG tags; tags that a phone can read are prepared.
NFC modes: Reader / writer, card emulation and peer-to-peer (P2P) mode; communication trials with an NFC phone are possible.
3.3V and 5V compatible: 3.3V - 5V supply; because the I2C and UART lines are 5V TTL compatible, it connects to 5V and 3.3V boards without a level shifter.
On-board PCB antenna: The antenna is on the board; it gives about 5cm - 7cm reading distance, no extra antenna or tuning is needed.

Usage information:
- Select the communication type on the DIP switch with power off: for I2C switch 1 ON and switch 2 OFF, for SPI switch 1 OFF and switch 2 ON, for HSU (UART) both OFF. If the switch setting is wrong the library reports "Didn't find PN53x board".
- For I2C connect the VCC, GND, SDA and SCL pins to the controller board (VCC to 5V on 5V boards, to 3.3V on 3.3V boards). In UART mode the same pins work as TXD / RXD. In SPI mode the SCK, MISO, MOSI, SS pins of the 8-pin row are used.
- MIFARE Classic cards come from the factory with the key FF FF FF FF FF FF; to read or write a sector, first authenticate with this key. For access control write your own key.
Application areas:
- Card door locks and access control systems
- Personnel tracking and time attendance devices
- School and course attendance systems
- Turnstile and parking barrier card readers
- Card locker and drawer locks
- Inventory and asset tracking (with NFC tags)
- NFC pairing with phones and writing links / information to tags
- Prepaid card meter and vending machine trials
- Portable handheld card reader devices
Precautions:
- This module only reads 13.56MHz cards. 125kHz cards and key fobs (such as EM4100) are not read; a 125kHz RFID reader is needed for them.
- A metal surface behind the module or behind the card reduces the reading distance or prevents reading. On metal doors and boxes mount the module with a gap from the metal.
- Do not change the DIP switch while powered; the new setting takes effect after the power is switched off and on.
- The UID number of a card can be read and copied. Do not rely only on the UID for access control. MIFARE Classic encryption (Crypto1) can also be broken; where security matters use a strongly encrypted card such as DESFire.
- The current rises momentarily while the RF transmitter works; with long thin wires reading becomes unstable. Supply power with short wires from a source with enough current.
