Steel Sensor Head 6x30mm Housing
Temperature Heat Sensor Case Metal Tube Pipe D818b20 Ntc Lm35 PT100 Protector
The 6x30mm steel sensor head is a stainless steel tube with a 6mm outer diameter and 30mm length, closed at one end and open at the other. TO-92 packaged sensors such as DS18B20 and LM35 and NTC thermistor elements are placed inside the sheath and the gap is filled with epoxy; this gives a temperature probe that can be immersed in liquids and resists impact and moisture.
The 30mm length is the shortest of the 6mm diameter heads in our store: it is long enough to hold the sensor and the solder joints, but it fits into narrow places, small containers and thin pipe fittings more easily than 50mm and longer heads. Since it contains less metal, its thermal mass is smaller than that of longer heads. The inner diameter of about 5mm is enough for a TO-92 body to fit; the fit is tight.
It lets you build your own waterproof probe for thermostat projects in applications such as aquariums, incubators, greenhouses, refrigerators, combi boilers and water heaters. If you need a different size, 4x50mm, 5x30mm, 6x50mm, 6x100mm, 6x120mm, 8x50mm and 8x100mm options are also available in our store.
Key features:
Short 30mm body: As the shortest of the 6mm diameter heads, it fits narrow spaces, small containers and places with a short immersion depth.
Tube closed at one end: The closed end goes into the liquid or medium to be measured; the sensor and cable are inserted from the open end and sealed with epoxy.
Stainless steel: The polished stainless steel surface resists oxidation; the thin metal wall transfers the ambient temperature to the sensor inside.
Wide sensor compatibility: TO-92 packaged sensors such as DS18B20 and LM35 and NTC thermistors fit into the inner diameter of about 5mm.
Light: With a weight of about 1gr it adds no noticeable weight to the probe tip.
Features:
- Product type: Stainless steel temperature sensor protective sheath closed at one end (thermowell)
- End structure: One end closed, the other end open for the sensor and cable entry
- Compatible sensors: DS18B20, LM35, NTC thermistor and other TO-92 packaged temperature sensors; PT100 / PT1000 elements of fitting size
- Method of use: The sensor is placed inside the sheath and fixed by filling the gap with epoxy
- Protection: Protects the sensor against liquid, moisture, impact and external effects
- Heat transfer: The thin metal wall transfers the ambient temperature to the sensor
- Short length: Shortest of the 6mm diameter heads; suitable for narrow spaces and short immersion depth
- Surface: Polished surface resistant to oxidation and rust
- Durability: Its metal structure protects the sensor against impacts
- Options: 4x50mm, 5x30mm, 6x50mm, 6x100mm, 6x120mm, 8x50mm and 8x100mm steel sensor heads are sold separately
- Operating temperature: The sheath withstands high temperatures; the operating range is set by the sensor, cable and epoxy inside (-55°C - +125°C for DS18B20)
- Shape: Cylindrical tube
- Material: Stainless steel
- Color: Gray (metal)
- Inner diameter: about 5mm; TO-92 packaged sensors fit tightly
- Dimensions: 6mm x 30mm (outer diameter x length)
- Weight: about 1gr
Usage information:
- Solder the cable to the sensor legs and insulate each leg with a separate sleeve or heat shrink tube; the metal sheath is conductive, a bare leg touching the sheath causes a short circuit. Since the 30mm length is short, keep the solder joints close to the sensor.
- Push the sensor to the very bottom of the sheath so that its measuring end comes to the closed end. Fill the gap with epoxy (with thermal paste if needed for heat transfer) and seal the open end with epoxy and heat shrink tube.
- Place the finished probe with its closed end in the liquid or medium to be measured; the open end where the cable exits must stay out of the liquid.
Application areas:
- Aquarium water temperature measurement and heater control
- Incubator temperature control
- Greenhouse and soil temperature measurement
- Refrigerator, deep freezer and cold room temperature monitoring
- Combi boiler and radiator pipe temperature monitoring
- Water heater, hot water tank and solar water heater
- Liquid temperature in small containers, bottles and narrow pipe fittings
- Thermostat and temperature controller board projects
- Repair of a broken ready-made temperature probe
- Building a waterproof temperature probe with Arduino and ESP32
Precautions:
- The sheath alone is not waterproof. Before using it in liquid, seal the open end completely with epoxy and heat shrink tube.
- The metal sheath conducts electricity. Do not place the sensor legs and solder joints in the sheath without insulating them.
- The operating temperature is set not by the sheath but by the sensor, cable insulation and epoxy inside. Do not exceed the temperature limit of these materials.
- The inner diameter is about 5mm. Sensors with a body larger than TO-92 do not fit; a long sensor body and solder joints may not fit the 30mm length, choose the 6x50mm head if needed.
- The grade of the steel (such as 304, 316) is not specified. Salt water (marine aquarium) and chlorinated pool water can cause pitting corrosion on stainless steel over time; check the sheath regularly in these environments.
- Suitability of the sheath and the filling epoxy for contact with food and drinking water is not documented. Do not immerse the probe directly in food.
