ST ST-LINK V2 Arm Mcu Jtag Swim Swd Programmer Debugger
Stm8 Stm32 Mcu Microcontrollers Mini Usb Icsp in Circuit Programmer Emulator
ST-LINK V2 is the in-circuit programmer and debugger made by STMicroelectronics for the STM8 and STM32 microcontroller families. This is an original ST product; it comes in the white ST box with the white plastic ST logo case and all connection cables. It connects to the computer through a USB 2.0 full speed interface and takes its power from USB (5V).
STM8 microcontrollers are programmed through the single wire SWIM interface, STM32 microcontrollers through the JTAG or SWD (serial wire debug) interface. The SWIM interface supports 1.65V - 5.5V target voltage, the JTAG/SWD interface supports 1.65V - 3.6V target voltage, and the JTAG/SWD inputs are 5V tolerant. SWV (serial wire viewer) communication is also supported together with SWD; trace data can be read on the computer while the program runs.
On the STM32 side it works with STM32CubeIDE, STM32CubeProgrammer and third party development environments such as Keil and IAR; on the STM8 side with ST Visual Develop (STVD) and ST Visual Programmer (STVP). The package contains a ribbon cable that plugs directly into the 20 pin JTAG header of STM32 boards and two separate SWIM cables for STM8 boards.
Key features:
Original ST product: Made by STMicroelectronics; it is recognised directly by ST development environments and programming software, and its firmware is updated with the ST tool.
STM8 and STM32 in one device: The SWIM interface programs STM8 and the JTAG and SWD interface programs STM32 microcontrollers and gives step by step debugging; no separate programmer is needed for the two families.
Wide target voltage: Works with 1.65V - 5.5V target voltage on SWIM and 1.65V - 3.6V on JTAG/SWD; the JTAG/SWD inputs are 5V tolerant.
SWV tracing: Over the SWD connection, SWV brings printf style trace output and timing information into the development environment while the program runs.
Complete cable set: USB A - mini B cable, 20 pin JTAG/SWD ribbon cable, 4 pin 2.54mm SWIM cable and SWIM cable with ERNI connector are in the package.

Usage information:
- For an STM32 board, plug the 20 pin ribbon cable into the JTAG socket of the ST-LINK V2 and into the 20 pin JTAG/SWD header of the board. If the board only has SWD pins (SWDIO, SWCLK, GND, NRST, target voltage), wire them to the pins with the same names on the 20 pin connector.
- For an STM8 board use one of the 4 pin SWIM cables: the 4 pin - 4 pin cable if the board has a 2.54mm pin header, the ERNI cable if it has an ERNI connector. The SWIM connection consists of the VDD, SWIM, GND and RESET lines.
- Switch on the target board's own power; the ST-LINK V2 senses the target voltage from the board and sets the SWIM, JTAG/SWD levels accordingly. Then select ST-LINK in STM32CubeProgrammer or your development environment and connect.
- On Windows the ST ST-LINK USB driver is installed (it comes with the STM32CubeIDE and STM32CubeProgrammer installation). If a firmware update is wanted, it is done over USB with the ST ST-LINK upgrade tool.
Applications:
- Firmware upload and update on STM32 microcontrollers
- Breakpoint and step by step debugging with STM32CubeIDE
- Flash write, read, erase and option byte setting with STM32CubeProgrammer
- STM32 development with Keil MDK and IAR Embedded Workbench
- Programming STM8 microcontrollers with STVP and STVD
- In-circuit programming of your own STM32 / STM8 boards
- Tracing the running program and timing measurement with SWV
- Firmware loading in small series production
- Reloading software on a faulty or locked STM32 board
- Embedded software courses and laboratory work
Precautions:
- The JTAG/SWD target voltage is at most 3.6V. The logic voltage of the STM32 board must be in this range; 5V tolerance applies to the inputs only.
- Watch the pin 1 mark when plugging the cables (coloured wire on the ribbon, arrow or notch on the connector); a reversed connector can damage the target board and the programmer.
- The programmer cannot connect while the target board power is off or the target voltage pin is not connected.
- Operating temperature is 0°C - 50°C; do not use it outside this range.
- This product is for STM8 and STM32; it is not used to program other brands of microcontrollers (AVR, PIC, ESP32).
