     The ST-LINK V2 CN is an in-circuit programmer and debugger for the STM8 and STM32 microcontroller families. It connects to the STM8 series through the single wire SWIM interface and to the STM32 series through the JTAG or SWD interface; it connects to the computer over Mini USB with USB 2.0 full speed and takes its power from USB (5V). It uploads programs without removing the chip from the board, writes Flash and EEPROM memory and debugs by running the program step by step.

     On top of the white case there is a 20 pin 2.54mm JTAG / SWD socket and a 4 pin STM8 SWIM socket, with the Mini USB input and the COM status LED beside them. The SWIM interface works with 1.65V - 5.5V target voltage and the JTAG / SWD interface with 1.65V - 3.6V (inputs are 5V tolerant). The SWIM programming speed is 9.7Kbytes/s in low speed and 12.8Kbytes/s in high speed. Its firmware is updated over USB; new STM8 and STM32 models are supported through these updates.

     The package contains, together with the unit, a 20 pin JTAG ribbon cable, two 4 pin STM8 SWIM connection cables and a Mini USB cable; it is used out of the box with STM32CubeIDE, STM32CubeProgrammer, Keil, IAR and, for STM8, STVD / STVP. Drivers and software do not come on a CD; they are downloaded from the STMicroelectronics website.

Usage information:

• Download and install the ST-LINK V2 USB driver and the software you will use (STM32CubeProgrammer, STM32CubeIDE or STVP for STM8) from the STMicroelectronics website, then plug the unit into the computer with the Mini USB cable; when the LED turns red the connection is established.
• Connect an STM32 board with the 20 pin JTAG ribbon cable (JTAG or SWD) and an STM8 board with the 4 pin SWIM cable. Power the target board from its own supply; the unit reads the target voltage on the VDD line, so this line must be connected.
• The software may suggest updating the ST-LINK firmware on the first connection; do the update. If you have recognition problems, try another USB port or cable and update the firmware.

Precautions:

•  The unit does not power the target board; connect it while the target board runs from its own supply. If the target is not powered, the software reports a "no target found" error.
•  The JTAG / SWD interface is for 1.65V - 3.6V target voltage; connect to a 5V target only through the SWIM interface.
•  The unit has no isolation; the computer and the target board share GND. Use an isolated programmer on mains connected circuits or circuits at a different ground potential.
•  The red striped edge of the 20 pin ribbon cable is pin 1; do not plug cables in reverse and check the pin order of the target board.
•  A few computers may not recognise the ST-LINK; in that case try another USB port, cable or computer and update the firmware.
