XL6019 5A DC-DC Adjustable Step-up Power Supply Module

     The XL6019 Step-up Module is an adjustable output DC-DC voltage booster board carrying the XL6019 switching boost IC. It raises an input voltage between 3V - 35V to a higher output voltage set between 5V-40V with the multi-turn trimpot on the board. The switching current of the XL6019 IC is 5A maximum; the board measures 50mm x 28mm x 13mm and weighs about 20gr.

     The board has screw terminal blocks for the input and output connections; the wires are clamped to the IN+ / IN- and OUT+ / OUT- terminals without soldering. On the board IN+ is the positive supply input, IN- is ground, OUT+ is the positive output voltage and OUT- is the output ground. In applications with the board, the output voltage must always be higher than the input voltage.

     The continuous output current depends on the difference between input and output voltage and on cooling; without a heatsink the IC stays cool below about 15W, and a heatsink on the IC is recommended above about 20W. It is used to supply 19V - 24V devices from a 12V battery, to get 12V from a lithium battery, for LED strips, solar panel systems and test setups. Compared with the XL6009 module of the same series it gives higher current (5A) and higher output voltage (40V), and it is easier to install thanks to its terminal blocks.

Usage information:

• Connect the power source to the IN+ and IN- terminals and the load to the OUT+ and OUT- terminals. Before connecting the load, measure the output with a multimeter and set the desired voltage with the trimpot.
• The trimpot is multi-turn; you may need many turns to see the voltage change. Watch the output with a multimeter while turning. The output cannot be set lower than the input: if you need to lower the voltage, use a step-down module.
• The input power is always greater than the output power. Example: to draw 24V 1A (24W) from 12V, the input source must be able to supply more than 2A including the efficiency loss. Choose the current of your source accordingly.

Precautions:

•  The product only steps voltage up. The output voltage must always be set higher than the input voltage; if the input is higher than the set output, the input voltage passes directly to the output.
•  5A is the switching current limit of the IC, not the continuous output current. Fit a heatsink on the IC above about 20W in continuous use; the available output current drops as the step-up ratio increases.
•  The input must not exceed 35V and the output must not exceed 40V. Disconnect the load while adjusting the output; a wrongly set high voltage damages the load.
•  The module is non-isolated; input and output ground are common. Do not connect the outputs of several modules in parallel.
