     This product is a ready-made temperature sensor made of a 10K NTC thermistor placed inside a 5mm x 25mm stainless steel probe and a 100cm cable. The NTC element, with a resistance of 10kΩ (±1%) at 25°C and a B25/50 value of 3950K (±1%), is potted with epoxy inside the steel sheath, which makes it waterproof. The 2-pin, 2.54mm pitch XH type socket at the other end of the cable plugs directly into thermostat and controller boards with an XH2.54 NTC input.

     The cylindrical steel probe can be immersed in water, liquids or the medium to be measured; thanks to its closed end and epoxy filling it can also be used in humid environments. An NTC is an element whose resistance drops as the temperature rises, so the temperature is calculated by measuring the resistance between its two wires; it has no polarity, the wire direction does not matter. It measures from about -20°C to +105°C; the upper limit is set by the PVC insulated cable.

     In applications such as aquariums, incubators, greenhouses, refrigerators, combi boilers and water heaters it is used as a spare or additional sensor for digital thermostat boards with a 10K NTC input. The same sensor is also available in our store with 50cm, 200cm, 300cm, 5 meter and 10 meter cables, with a mounting hole (ring lug) and with an M8 thread.

Key features:

     Stainless steel probe: The NTC element is fixed with epoxy inside a 5mm x 25mm steel sheath. The probe can be immersed in liquids and is protected against impact and moisture.

     Standard 10K, B3950 value: 10kΩ (±1%) at 25°C and a B25/50 value of 3950K (±1%) are the values expected by most thermostat boards with a 10K NTC input and by most temperature calculations.

     Plug-in socket: The 2-pin XH2.54 socket at the end of the 100cm cable plugs into a 2.54mm pitch NTC input on the board without soldering.

     Non-polar 2-wire connection: An NTC is a resistor; there is no direction between the two wires; the reading is the same whichever way the two ends are connected.

     Light with a long cable: With 8gr weight and a 100cm cable, the sensor can reach the measuring point from where the board is located.

Usage information:

• Plug the XH2.54 socket into the NTC input of the thermostat or controller board. The board must be set for a 10K NTC with B3950; on a board expecting a different value the temperature reading drifts.
• When reading with a board with an analog input, build a voltage divider by connecting the sensor in series with a fixed 10kΩ resistor. At 25°C the voltage at the midpoint is half of the supply voltage; calculate the temperature with the 10kΩ and 3950K values.
• For liquid measurement immerse the steel probe completely in the liquid. For surface measurement lay the probe on the surface with thermal paste and fix it with a clamp or aluminum tape.

Precautions:

•  The upper limit of the measuring range is about +105°C. At hotter points such as ovens, stoves or exhausts the PVC cable and epoxy are damaged; it is not suitable for these places.
•  Use the sensor only with boards set for a 10K NTC with B3950. On an input expecting a 5K or 100K NTC or a different B value, the temperature reading is wrong.
•  Only the steel probe and the epoxy filling are waterproof; the XH2.54 socket and the cable end are not water resistant. Keep the socket out of the wet area.
•  Do not bend the cable sharply at the probe exit and do not pull on it; the insulation between the epoxy filling and the cable can be damaged.
•  Suitability of the probe and epoxy for contact with food or drinking water is not documented. Do not immerse it directly in food.
