AS5600 Magnetic Angle Measurement Sensor Module
12 Bit Contactless Position Potentiometer RC Servo Pedal Mechanical Angle Rotary Control Hall Effect
The AS5600 Magnetic Angle Sensor Module measures the absolute angle between 0 and 360 degrees without contact by reading the direction of a diametrically magnetized magnet mounted on the shaft end with the AS5600 IC on the board. With 12 bit resolution it divides one turn into 4096 steps; one step is approximately 0.088 degrees. Since there is no contact between the sensor and the magnet, there is no friction, wear or contact noise as in a potentiometer, and the shaft can rotate continuously (the sensor does not count turns; it gives the angle within one turn).
The 23mm x 23mm white board has the VCC, OUT and GND pins on one edge and the DIR, SCL, SDA and GPO pins on the other edge. The angle value is read over I2C (address 0x36) or taken from the OUT pin as an analog voltage or a PWM signal. The DIR pin selects the direction in which the value increases. The mounting holes in the four corners of the board are used to fix the sensor directly above the magnet.
The board, a 7 pin male pin header and a diametric magnet come together in the package, so the module can be used without looking for a separate magnet. It is suitable for angle measuring assemblies such as gimbal and brushless motor position sensing, contactless rotary knobs, pedal and steering angle, robot arm joints and wind vanes.
Key features:
Contactless absolute angle: Since the direction of the magnet is read, the measurement is frictionless and wear free. When power is lost and restored, the shaft position is read directly without searching for zero.
12 bit resolution: One turn is divided into 4096 steps; the angle is read in steps of approximately 0.088 degrees.
Three output options: The raw angle and configuration registers are read over I2C (address 0x36); an analog voltage or a PWM output is taken from the OUT pin. It can be used with the analog input or a timer of a microcontroller.
Adjustable range and direction: The start and stop positions are programmed over I2C so that the output spans the required angle range. The increase direction is selected by connecting the DIR pin to GND or VCC.
Ready with its magnet: A diametrically magnetized cylinder magnet is in the package; measurement starts when it is glued to the shaft end and the board is placed 0.5mm - 3mm above it.
Features:
- Product type: Contactless magnetic rotary angle (position) sensor module
- IC: AS5600 (ams) 12 bit magnetic rotary position sensor
- Resolution: 12 bit, 4096 steps per turn (approximately 0.088 degrees)
- Measuring range: 0 - 360 degrees absolute angle; the shaft can rotate continuously, turns are not counted
- Programmable range: Start and stop positions are programmable; minimum range 18 degrees
- Communication: I2C, fixed address 0x36
- Output (OUT pin): Analog (voltage proportional to supply) or PWM, selectable
- Direction selection: DIR pin at GND increases clockwise, at VCC increases counterclockwise
- Operating voltage: 3.3V (default board setting); see the Precautions section for 5V use

- Pins: VCC, GND, OUT, DIR, SCL, SDA, GPO (programming option)
- Pin pitch: 2.54mm, 7 pin header (supplied unsoldered)
- Operating temperature: -20°C - 65°C (module); AS5600 IC -40°C - 125°C
- Mounting: Mounting holes in four corners
- Board color: White
- Dimensions: 23mm x 23mm
- Weight: approximately 3gr (board)
Usage information:
- Glue the magnet to the end of the shaft to be measured, centered on the shaft axis. Fix the board 0.5mm - 3mm above the magnet so that the AS5600 IC is exactly at the center of the magnet; the magnet and the IC must be parallel to each other.
- Connect the VCC pin to 3.3V and GND to ground. To read the angle over I2C, connect the SDA and SCL pins to the I2C pins of the control board (address 0x36).
- Do not leave the DIR pin unconnected: connect it to GND for a clockwise increase or to VCC for a counterclockwise increase.
- If you use the analog or PWM output, connect the OUT pin to an analog input or a counter input of the control board; the output type and the angle range are set over I2C.
- The pin header is supplied unsoldered; solder it to the top or bottom of the board as needed.
Application areas:
- Contactless rotary potentiometer and adjustment knob
- Position sensing in gimbal and camera pan-tilt motors
- Closed loop position and speed control of brushless (BLDC) motors
- Robot arm joint angle measurement
- Throttle and brake pedal position sensing
- Steering wheel and joystick angle (simulator assemblies)
- Wind direction measurement with a wind vane
- Stepper and DC motor shaft position, missed step detection
- Valve, lid and flap angle measurement
- Antenna and solar panel direction tracking
Precautions:
- The board is set for a 3.3V supply by default. According to seller information, the R1 bridge resistor on the board must be removed to use it with 5V; do not apply 5V to VCC while R1 is fitted (the 3.3V supply pin of the AS5600 withstands at most 4V). When connecting the board in its 3.3V setting to a 5V control board, use a level converter on the SDA and SCL lines; when R1 is removed and the board is powered with 5V, the I2C and OUT signals are also at 5V level.
- If the DIR pin is left floating, the angle value becomes unstable and the rotation direction may change randomly; always connect it to GND or VCC.
- It only works with a diametrically magnetized magnet. An ordinary axially magnetized disc magnet or a magnet not centered on the shaft axis gives a wrong or jumping angle.
- The distance between the magnet and the sensor must not exceed 3mm; according to seller information, keeping it below approximately 2mm is recommended with the small magnet in the package.Nearby iron and steel parts, other magnets and motor magnets disturb the measurement; keep the sensor away from them.
- The board temperature range is -20°C - 65°C; do not stick it on heating surfaces such as a motor body.
