     40 Pin Rainbow Ribbon IDC Cable 1 Meter is a colored flat cable made of 40 cores laid side by side with 1.27mm core pitch. The cores repeat in 10 colors in sequence; the colors make it easy to tell which line goes to which pin while connecting and troubleshooting. Each core is a 28AWG, 7 strand (7x0.127mm) tinned copper conductor with PVC insulation; the total width of the cable is about 50.8mm.

     The cable is shipped without connectors, 1 meter long. The 1.27mm pitch fits 2.54mm pitch dual row IDC female sockets; the socket is pressed onto the cable for a solderless connection. The 40 cores can be separated into any number: strips of 2, 4, 10 or 20 cores can be prepared to make neat, colored jumper cables in circuits.

Usage information:

• Separate the required number of cores by pulling slowly by hand starting from the end of the cable; if you use a utility knife, cut only the thin joining line between the cores and do not damage the insulation.
• When fitting an IDC socket, align core 1 of the cable (the brown core at the edge) with pin 1 marked with a triangle on the socket; place the cable square to the socket and press it with even force using a press or vise.
• For soldered connections, strip the core end short, twist the strands and tin them; the thin insulation melts if the soldering iron touches it for a long time.

Points to consider:

•  The product is only the cable; IDC sockets, dupont terminals and connectors are not included in the package.
•  The core pitch is 1.27mm; check that the IDC socket fits flat cable of this pitch.
•  Each core is a thin (28AWG) conductor; do not use it for power lines carrying high current.
•  The cable is for low voltage signal lines; although the insulation voltage rating is 300V, do not use this thinly insulated cable for mains (220V) connections.
•  A stranded core end does not sit firmly in a breadboard hole by itself; tin the end or fit a male pin.
