RDM6300 125 kHz RFID Card Reader
Wireless Magnetic Card Reader EM4100 Tag Identity Stock Personnel Tracking Security Entrance Control System Uart
The RDM6300 is a small reader module that reads the ID number of EM4100 and compatible RFID cards, key fobs and tags working at 125kHz. It is powered with 5V, draws less than about 50mA and sends the card number it reads from its UART (TTL serial) output at 9600 bps. When a card is brought close to the reader, the number is decoded in less than 100ms; the microcontroller gets the card number simply by listening to the serial line.
The module is a board of about 38.5mm x 19mm and works with an external copper antenna coil with a cable and connector. The card reading distance is about 20mm - 50mm depending on the card and antenna. Power and serial connections are made from a 2.54mm pitch male pin header; the antenna plugs into a 2-pin connector, and there is also an output pin for an external LED or buzzer.
It is used in card operated systems such as door access control, personnel and attendance tracking, locked cabinets, parking and turnstiles. The module only reads: it reads the card number and does not write data to the card. It does not read 13.56MHz (Mifare) cards; make sure your card is 125kHz.
Key features:
Ready serial output: The card number comes from the 9600 bps UART line as an ASCII frame (start 0x02, 10 data characters, 2 checksum characters, end 0x03); decoding is done inside the module.
EM4100 compatible: It reads 125kHz EM4100 and EM4102 cards, key fobs and tags; it works with the 125kHz cards widely used in door and personnel systems.
External antenna: The copper antenna coil is separate from the module with a cable; the coil can be placed behind the reading surface and the module inside the box.
Fast reading: Decoding time is less than 100ms; the number is sent as soon as the card is brought close to the reader.
Low consumption, compact module: It draws less than 50mA at 5V; the module of about 38.5mm x 19mm fits in narrow boxes.

Usage information:
- Plug the connector of the antenna cable into the 2-pin antenna input of the module. Connect the +5V pin on the P1 header to the 5V supply, the GND pin to the GND of the control board and the TX pin to the serial input (RX) pin of the control board. Set the serial speed to 9600 bps.
- Bring the card or key fob close to the front of the antenna coil; the module sends the card number over the serial line and keeps sending the same number about every 65ms while the card stays in front of the antenna. You can compare the incoming 10 characters (2 characters version code + 8 characters card number) with the stored numbers to control a door, lock or relay; count consecutive repeats of the same number as a single read in your software.
- On control boards with 3.3V logic it is recommended to connect the TX line through a two-resistor voltage divider that lowers it to 3.3V level; the supply of the module must stay 5V.
Areas of use:
- Door access control and card lock systems
- Personnel entry and exit and attendance tracking
- Card reading at turnstiles and parking barriers
- Locked cabinet, drawer and safe control
- Stock, warehouse and product tag identification
- Elevator floor authorisation and card energy switches
- Hotel, office and school card systems
- Library and equipment lending tracking systems
- Gym, residential site and club member card systems
- Interactive toys and exhibition setups
Precautions:
- RFID product selection information: There are 2 types of RFID products, 13.56MHz and 125kHz. If there are numbers on your cards or key fobs, your system is 125kHz. If there is no writing, it is 13.56MHz. Make your product selection accordingly.
- This module does not read 13.56MHz (Mifare, NFC) cards and does not write to cards; it only reads the number of 125kHz EM4100 compatible cards.
- Do not place the antenna coil on a metal surface or inside a metal box; metal reduces the reading distance or prevents reading.
- The supply is 5V; a supply above 5V may damage the module. Do not break the antenna cable by pulling or bending it.
