DC 5-24V 3A  70W Infrared Short Distance Obstacle Detecting Switch

     The 10cm Infrared Switch is a small switching board that detects a hand passing in front of its infrared emitter and receiver pair and turns the connected load on or off. It works from DC 5V - 24V, passes the input voltage to the output and carries up to 3A load current. About 36W of LED strip at 12V, or about 70W at 24V, can be powered directly through this board. The detection distance is about 10mm - 80mm and depends on how well the hand or surface reflects light.

     The board toggles with each hand wave: pass your hand in front of the sensor once and the output turns on, pass it again and it turns off. Cabinet, kitchen counter or mirror lighting can be switched without touching anything, so there is no need to press a button with wet or dirty hands. The on-board indicator LED shows the switch state, and the standby current is about 10mA.

     The long, narrow white board fits inside aluminium LED profiles and cabinet shelves. Wiring is made to the solder pads at both ends of the board: IN (input, supply) at one end and OUT (output, load) at the other. By adding a relay module to the output, 220V devices can also be switched.

Usage information:

• Solder the + of the power supply to the IN+ pad and the - to the IN - pad; connect the + of the LED strip to OUT+ and the - to OUT -. The supply voltage must match the LED strip voltage (12V supply for a 12V strip).
• Mount the infrared sensor (the black double eye on the board) facing the direction the hand will pass. The front of the sensor must stay open; a frosted diffuser, coloured plastic or metal cover blocks detection.
• Pass your hand about 1cm - 8cm in front of the sensor once; the output turns on. Pass it again to turn it off. If it does not detect, move your hand a little closer.
• To control a 220V device, connect a relay module rated for the input voltage and fitted with a coil protection diode to the output; the 220V line only passes through the relay contact.

Precautions:

•  The board works only from DC 5V - 24V. It is not connected directly to 220V mains; a 220V device is controlled only through a relay connected to the output.
•  Load current must not exceed 3A. Calculate the total current of long LED strips and leave a margin below 3A for continuous use; use a relay or stronger switching for loads above 3A.
•  Do not connect coil loads such as motors, pumps or bare relay coils without a diode directly to the output; the board is for DC constant voltage LED lighting and resistive loads.
•  Sunlight and strong infrared sources can disturb detection; black and dark coloured surfaces reflect little light, so the detection distance gets shorter.
•  This product is not a motion (PIR) sensor; it does not detect a person entering the room, only a hand passing close to the sensor.
