ADUM3160 USB Isolator Module Cased
Port Protector Galvanic Isolation iCoupler B0505S Ground Loop Audio DAC Multimeter PLC CNC 3D Printer Laboratory
The ADUM3160 USB Isolator Module Cased is a protection module that electrically separates (galvanic isolation) the computer's USB port from the connected device. It is plugged in between the PC and the device to prevent damage to the USB-connected computer and its motherboard in circuits working with high voltage, strong electrical interference or a different ground potential. The data line uses the ADUM3160 IC working with Analog Devices' iCoupler technology, and the power line uses a B0505S isolated DC-DC power module.
The module is USB 2.0 compatible; it works with Full Speed (12Mbps) devices, Low Speed (1.5Mbps) support depends on the board's speed setting, and it does not pass High Speed (480Mbps) traffic. It passes control, bulk, interrupt and isochronous transfers. It needs no driver, works plug and play and needs no external power supply: power is taken from the computer's USB port, and 1W of isolated power is given to the device side.
Data line isolation is 2500V in the ADUM3160 IC, power line isolation is 1500V in the B0505S module. Because it cuts noise caused by ground loops, it is used in USB sound card and DAC applications, in measurement and laboratory equipment, and in the USB connection of industrial devices such as PLC and CNC. Thanks to its translucent grey plastic case the board is protected against external effects and can be used directly like a USB cable.
Features:
- Product type: Cased, single channel USB - USB galvanic isolator module
- Isolator IC: Analog Devices ADUM3160 (iCoupler magnetic isolation technology)
- Data line isolation: 2500Vrms, 1 minute (ADUM3160 IC rating)
- Power line isolation: 1500VDC (B0505S isolated DC-DC power module)
- USB compatibility: USB 2.0 Full Speed 12Mbps (Low Speed 1.5Mbps support depends on the board's speed setting)
- Unsupported speed: High Speed (480Mbps); devices working only at High Speed are not supported
- Transfer types: control, bulk, interrupt and isochronous transfers
- Isolated output power: 1W (about 200mA at 5V on the device side)
- Power supply: from the computer's USB port; no external power supply needed
- Driver: not required; plug and play, can be plugged and unplugged while running (hot swap)
- Cuts ground loop noise; protects the PC's USB port and motherboard against ground potential differences and interference (up to the isolation rating)
- Compatible devices: Full Speed devices such as USB-serial converters, Arduino and microcontroller boards, programmers, Full Speed USB sound cards and DACs
- Connectors: USB-A male (computer side), USB-A female (device side)
- Operating temperature: -40°C - 85°C
- Material: board printed "USB ISOLATOR" inside a translucent grey plastic case
- Dimensions: 52.9mm x 23.6mm x 14.2mm (including case)
Usage information:
- Plug the module's USB-A male end into the computer's USB port; connect the USB device to be protected to the module's USB-A female input. No driver installation is needed, the device appears directly on the computer.
- Make sure your device works at Full Speed (12Mbps). Devices such as USB-serial converters, Arduino, programmers and USB sound cards work at these speeds.
- The isolated power given to the device side is 1W. Power devices that draw more current from their own power supply.
Application areas:
- Cutting ground loop noise in USB sound card and DAC connections
- Connecting Full Speed USB measurement devices such as multimeters and power supplies to the computer
- USB connection of PLCs, servo drives and industrial control devices
- Connecting CNC and 3D printer boards to the computer
- Protecting the computer in laboratory experiments and high voltage circuit tests
- Programming Arduino, STM32 and ESP32 boards in power electronics projects
- Isolated use of USB-serial (RS232/RS485) converters
- Protection against interference in motor driver, inverter and charger circuit development
- Monitoring solar panels, battery management systems (BMS) and chargers over USB
Points to consider:
- The module is for Full Speed (12Mbps). Devices that need High Speed (480Mbps), such as USB logic analyzers, USB oscilloscopes, webcams and USB Wi-Fi adapters, do not work; devices that can fall back to Full Speed, such as USB flash drives, only work slowly at 12Mbps. Low Speed devices such as keyboards and mice may not work, depending on the board's speed setting.
- The isolated power given to the device side is 1W (about 200mA at 5V). Devices drawing more current cannot be powered from the module.
- The data line is isolated to 2500V and the power line to 1500V; the module's isolation value should be taken as the lower power line value (1500VDC).
- The module is intended for device and computer protection; it should not be used as a personal safety (human protection) isolator when working with mains voltage.
