     The ADUM3160 4 Port USB Module is an isolated USB hub board that turns a single computer USB port into 4 galvanically isolated USB-A outputs. The computer side connects through a USB-B socket; devices plug into the 4 female USB-A sockets on the other end of the board. The data lines are isolated by the Analog Devices ADuM3160 (iCoupler) IC at 2500V and the power line by a B0505S isolated DC-DC converter at 1500V, so faults or noise from devices working with high voltage or at a different ground potential do not reach the computer's USB port.

     The module is USB 2.0 compatible and supports 1.5Mbps (Low Speed) and 12Mbps (Full Speed); it needs no driver and is recognised plug and play. When the total current of the connected devices exceeds 400mA, an external 5V supply is connected to the 2-pin screw terminal on the board. Each output port has its own ESD protection IC and a communication indicator LED.

     Compared with the single-port cased ADUM3160 isolator, this open board offers 4 output ports and an external 5V supply input; it is suited to gathering several low-speed USB devices behind one isolation barrier. A USB A - USB B cable of about 53cm is included.

Key features:

     4 outputs behind one isolation: The single USB-B input on the computer side is distributed to 4 USB-A outputs behind the isolation barrier. Isolation is between input and outputs; the 4 outputs are not isolated from each other.

     Data and power isolated separately: Data lines are isolated at 2500V by the ADuM3160 and the supply line at 1500V by the B0505S converter; the lower value, 1500V, applies to the whole.

     External 5V input: When the computer port cannot supply enough power (above 400mA in total), the board is powered from a DC 5V adapter through the 2-pin screw terminal.

     ESD and LED per port: Each USB-A output has its own ESD protection IC and communication LED, so data activity on each port is visible on the board.

     Driverless use: Works plug and play with USB 2.0 Low Speed and Full Speed devices; the operating system sees the board as a standard USB hub.

Usage information:

• Connect the included USB A - USB B cable to the computer and to the USB-B input of the board; connect the devices to be protected to any of the 4 USB-A outputs. The board is recognised as a USB hub without a driver.
• If the total current of the connected devices exceeds 400mA, connect a regulated DC 5V adapter to the screw terminal, following the + and - markings.
• Devices on the outputs are behind the isolation barrier; do not join their ground to the computer-side ground separately, otherwise the isolation is lost.

Precautions:

•  The module supports only 1.5Mbps and 12Mbps. Devices that work only at 480Mbps High Speed are not supported; high-speed devices such as USB flash drives, external disks and webcams run slowly at no more than 12Mbps even when they work, and some are not recognised at all.
•  Apply only regulated DC 5V to the external input. A higher-voltage adapter will damage the USB devices connected to the outputs.
•  Isolation is only between the input port and the output ports; the 4 output ports are not isolated from each other.
•  The board is an open PCB; when used near high voltage, place it in an insulating enclosure and keep it away from conductive surfaces.
