DM556 2 Phase 50V 5.6A Stepper Motor Driver
Nema 17 / 23 CNC 3D Printer 25000 Microstep
DM556 is a DSP based digital microstep driver for 2 phase hybrid stepper motors. It is powered from DC 20V-50V; the motor phase current is selected with DIP switches in 8 steps between 1.4A and 5.6A (peak). Step resolution is set in 15 steps between 400 and 25600 steps/rev (25000 included); thanks to high microstepping the motor runs smoothly and quietly even at low speed.
The driver is controlled through the PUL (step), DIR (direction) and ENA (enable) inputs. The inputs are optically isolated and accept 5V-24V signal levels; a CNC controller, PLC or microcontroller output can be connected directly. Power and motor wiring use a 6 pin screw terminal, the control signals use 4 + 2 pin screw terminals. Current and step tables are printed on the front of the case, so settings can be made without the manual.
The aluminium case also works as a heat sink and is screwed into the cabinet with the mounting flanges on both sides. It is used with Nema17, Nema23 and Nema24 stepper motors in CNC routers, laser engravers, large 3D printers, conveyors and XY tables.
Example DIP switch setting for first use, 6400 steps (SW1-SW8): On On On On Off On Off On (SW1-SW3 On: 1.4A lowest current, SW4 On: full current at standstill, SW5-SW8 Off On Off On: 6400 steps/rev). Raise the current from the table on the front according to your motor's rated current.
Key features:
Wide current range: With 1.4A, 2.1A, 2.7A, 3.2A, 3.8A, 4.3A, 4.9A and 5.6A peak current steps, the same driver fits motors from small Nema17 up to Nema24.
Microstepping up to 25600 steps/rev: 15 steps from 400 to 25600 steps/rev (25000 included); smooth motion, low vibration and precise positioning.
Optically isolated inputs: PUL, DIR and ENA inputs are optically isolated and accept 5V-24V signals; the controller is separated from noise on the motor side.
Half current at standstill: With SW4 Off the current automatically drops to half when the motor stops, so the motor and driver heat less; with SW4 On full holding current is kept at standstill.
Heat sink case and status light: The aluminium case spreads the heat; the PWR/ALM light on the front shows power and fault status.

Usage information:
- Connect the supply (DC 20V-50V) to the +V and GND terminals, the first motor winding to A+ / A- and the second winding to B+ / B-. Identify the winding ends from the motor data sheet or with a multimeter (low resistance between the two ends of the same winding).
- Connect the step output of the controller to PUL and the direction output to DIR; the signal must be within 5V-24V. The ENA input is used to release the motor; leave it unconnected if not needed.
- Select the current with SW1-SW3 so that it does not exceed the motor's rated current; select the step resolution with SW5-SW8 and set the same steps/rev value in the control software. Change settings with the power off.
Application areas:
- CNC routers, milling and engraving machines
- Laser cutting and laser engraving machines
- Large 3D printers
- Conveyor and belt systems
- XY tables and linear axis assemblies
- Coil winding machines
- Camera sliders and positioning rigs
- Labeling and packaging machines
- Dosing pumps and liquid filling rigs
- Automatic doors, feeders and rotary table mechanisms
Precautions:
- The supply must be DC 20V-50V only; a supply above 50V or an AC supply damages the driver. Do not reverse the supply polarity (+V / GND).
- Do not connect or disconnect the motor wires while the power is on; the driver may be damaged.
- Do not select a current higher than the motor's rated current; the motor and driver overheat.
- Mount the driver in a ventilated place, with the case on a metal surface or in air flow; the case gets warm at high current.
- The signal inputs are for 5V-24V; a higher voltage damages the inputs.
