PAM8406 Module 5W x 2 Stereo Audio Amplifier
Mini Class D Digital Amplifier
The left and right outputs cannot be connected together to a single speaker. The IC is damaged with this type of connection.
Using a shielded audio connection cable reduces noise.
The PAM8406 Module is a 2 channel stereo Class D audio amplifier board based on the PAM8406 IC. With a 5V supply it gives up to 5W output power per channel (IC value: 2Ω load, 10% distortion; about 3W with 4Ω speakers); the right and left channels each drive their own speaker separately. It is used with 4Ω and 8Ω speakers. Thanks to its Class D design its efficiency is high, it runs cool and needs no heatsink.
The board has a separate volume potentiometer for the right and left channel; the volume of the two channels is set independently. Audio input goes to the RIN, GND, LIN pins, power and speaker outputs to the VCC, GND, ROUT+, ROUT-, LOUT+, LOUT- pins; the headers come soldered to the board. It works from DC 3V - 5V, so it can also be used with USB power.
The board measures 24mm x 23mm, weighs 4.5gr and can be fixed inside a speaker box or device with the mounting holes in its four corners. It is used to drive speakers in small audio systems such as computer speakers, Bluetooth speakers, music boxes and sound toys.
Key features:
2x5W stereo output: With a 5V supply it drives two speakers separately with up to 5W (2Ω), about 3W with 4Ω speakers, per channel; it is used with 4Ω and 8Ω speakers.
Separate volume control: There is a separate potentiometer on the board for the right and left channel; the volume of each channel is set separately with a screwdriver.
High efficiency Class D: The IC works with up to 90% efficiency and runs cool; no heatsink and no output filter are needed.
Can be USB powered: Because it works in the DC 3V - 5V range, it can be used with a 5V USB adapter, a power bank or a regulated 5V supply.
Protected IC: The PAM8406 IC has short circuit and over temperature protection and a circuit that suppresses the pop noise from the speaker at power on and power off.
Features:
- Product type: 2 channel stereo Class D audio amplifier module
- IC: PAM8406
- Output power: up to 2x5W (5V supply, 2Ω, 10% THD, IC value); 2x3W with 4Ω speakers, lower with 8Ω speakers
- Speaker impedance: 4Ω - 8Ω recommended
- Supply: DC 3V - 5V (IC operating range 2.5V - 5.5V)
- Can work with USB power
- Supply power: a supply of at least 10W (5V 2A) is recommended

- Protection: short circuit and over temperature protection, power on / off pop suppression (IC)
- Input pins: RIN, GND, LIN (stereo analog audio input)
- Supply and output pins: VCC, GND, ROUT+, ROUT-, LOUT+, LOUT-
- Headers: 3 pin and 6 pin male headers soldered
- Mounting: mounting hole in each of the 4 corners
- Board code: FC-99
- Board color: Blue
- Dimensions: 24mm x 23mm
- Weight: 4.5gr
Usage information:
- Connect the VCC pin to the positive terminal of the 5V supply and the GND pin next to it to the negative terminal.
- Connect the right channel of the audio source (3.5mm jack cable, MP3 module, DAC) to RIN, the left channel to LIN and its ground to the GND pin on the input side. Use a shielded audio cable to reduce noise.
- Connect the right speaker to the ROUT+ and ROUT- pins and the left speaker to the LOUT+ and LOUT- pins. Set the volume separately with the right and left potentiometers.
Areas of use:
- Computer speakers
- Small USB powered speaker systems
- Bluetooth speaker projects
- Music box and MP3 player speaker
- Internet radio and radio projects
- Sound toys and sound effect projects
- Doorbell and audible notification devices
- Announcement and audible alarm systems
- Speaker driver for education and laboratory applications
Precautions:
- The left and right outputs cannot be connected together to a single speaker, and the outputs cannot be combined for mono use. The IC is damaged with this type of connection.
- The outputs are bridge tied (BTL): do not connect the speaker minus terminal to GND and do not join the minus terminals of the two channels.
- The supply must not exceed 5.5V. For full volume use a supply of at least 10W (5V 2A); with a weak supply the sound distorts at high volume.
- The lowest recommended speaker impedance for the board is 4Ω; lower impedance or speakers connected in parallel strain the IC and make it hot.
- If the audio cable is unshielded and long, noise may appear in the sound; use a shielded and short cable.
