STM32F411CEU6 Black Pill Development Board
Arm Cortex-M4 DSP FPU, 512 Kb Flash 100 MHz Cpu, ART Accelerator
The STM32F411CEU6 Module is a development board of the V3.0 design known as the "Black Pill", built around ST's STM32F411CEU6 microcontroller. The processor has an ARM Cortex-M4 core running at up to 100MHz, with a hardware floating point unit (FPU) and DSP instructions. With 512KB Flash and 128KB RAM it is much faster and has far more memory than STM32F103 (Blue Pill) boards of the same size.
The board carries 25MHz and 32.768kHz crystals, NRST (reset), BOOT0 and KEY (user) buttons, a power (PWR) LED and a user LED on PC13, a 3.3V regulator and a Type-C USB socket. Both power and USB communication go through the Type-C socket. When connected to a computer while holding the BOOT0 button, the board appears as an ST device in USB DFU mode and programs can be uploaded over USB without an external programmer. For debugging, an ST-Link connects to the 4 pin SWD header at the edge.
Each long edge of the board has 20 pins; the pin names are printed on top of the board and it fits a breadboard with 2.54mm pitch. Under the board there is an empty pad for an optional SPI Flash chip. It can be programmed with STM32CubeIDE, Arduino IDE (STM32duino) and MicroPython.
Key features:
100MHz Cortex-M4, FPU and DSP: Floating point maths and signal processing instructions run in hardware; suitable for computation heavy work such as filters, motor control and audio processing.
512KB Flash, 128KB RAM: The large program and data memory easily holds big programs, buffers and the MicroPython interpreter.
Programming over Type-C USB: BOOT0 enters USB DFU mode; firmware is uploaded without a programmer. With USB 2.0 Full Speed OTG the board can appear to a computer as a keyboard, a virtual serial port or a HID device.
Rich peripherals: 12-bit ADC, 3 I2C, 3 USART, 5 SPI/I2S, SDIO and up to 11 timers; sensors, displays, SD cards and audio peripherals can be used on the same board.
Ready board hardware: 25MHz and 32.768kHz crystals, reset/BOOT0/user buttons, user LED and SWD header are on the board; it works without extra parts.

Usage information:
- To upload over USB, hold the BOOT0 button, press and release NRST, then release BOOT0. The board appears on the computer as a DFU device; upload with STM32CubeProgrammer (a driver install may be needed).
- For SWD programming and debugging, connect the SWDIO, SWCLK, GND and 3.3V leads of the ST-Link to the 4 pin header at the edge (DIO, SCK, GND, 3V3).
- The pin headers come separately with the board; to use it on a breadboard, solder the 20 pin headers to both edges of the board.
- The user LED is on PC13 and lights when the pin is LOW; the KEY button is on PA0.
Areas of use:
- Keyboards and macro keypads (USB HID)
- Motor driver and brushless motor control experiments
- Audio processing, I2S audio input and output
- Data logging (with SD card)
- Gamepads and USB controller devices
- Measurement and sensor data collection
- Filter and signal processing (DSP) applications
- Display and user interface control
- 3D printer and CNC auxiliary control board
- Learning STM32 and ARM programming
Precautions:
- The pin logic level is 3.3V. Do not apply 5V to the 3V3 pin. Most pins are 5V tolerant but not all (including pins in analog mode); check the microcontroller pin table before connecting a 5V signal.
- Do not power the board from USB and the 5V pin at the same time; the 5V pin is connected directly to the USB supply.
- Some Type-C cables are charge only and have no data lines; if the board does not appear on the computer, use a data capable cable.
- The current of the on board 3.3V regulator is limited; do not power high current modules (motors, relays, strong RF modules) from the 3.3V pin.
