     It is a full-bridge motor driver based on the L298 motor driver IC. It can drive two separate 2A DC motors or 1 piece 2A stepper motor. You can control the speed and directions of the motors independently of each other. In addition, there are 6 connectors on the board connected to the Arduino analog pins for fast prototyping. By using the buzzer on the board, a signal can be given in desired situations.

Power: The Motor Shield must be powered only from an external source. Because the L298 IC has 2 separate power connections, one for logic and the other for motor supply. The required motor current will mostly exceed the max. current that usb can provide.

     External supply can be provided with an adapter or with a battery. The adapter can be connected from the 2.1mm center positive power jack on the arduino or from the VMS and GND terminal blocks on the driver, paying attention to polarity. However, it is always recommended that the power be supplied from the terminal block on the driver. Because when it is supplied from the power jack on the Arduino, the current drawn by the motors will pass through the Arduino and reach the driver. Since the Arduino Vin line is made to pass a maximum of 1A current, the arduino board may be damaged at currents higher than 1A. Therefore, external power must always be supplied from the terminal block on the driver.

     The VMS terminal block on the driver is also connected to the Arduino Vin pin through the header. That is, when the power connection is made over the terminal block, the Arduino will also take its power over the Vin pin and step it down to 5V with the regulator on itself. In this way, you do not need to use 2 separate power supplies. However, as you know, the Vin pin on the arduino accepts an input between 7V-12V. In this case, if a voltage between 5V-7V is to be supplied to the driver board, since this voltage range is lower than the minimum values of the regulator on the arduino, the arduino board will not work properly. To prevent this situation, there is an "OPT" jumper on the driver board. This jumper joins the VMS terminal block on the driver with the arduino Vin pin. If a voltage between 5V-7V is to be supplied to the driver, this jumper is removed. In this way, the driver VMS and the arduino Vin are separated from each other and the operation of the Arduino is also ensured by supplying an external 5V to the arduino. Afterwards, this jumper can be restored to its original state on the board. If the driver is to be supplied with a voltage between 7V-12V, the board can be used by leaving the jumper as it is.


Input and Output:

  • The motor shield has two independent channels named A and B. Each of these channels is controlled with 2 arduino pins. A total of 4 pins are used by the shield. These channels can be used separately to drive 2 separate DC motors or used together to drive 1 unipolar or bipolar stepper motor. The D12 pin for channel A and the D13 pin for channel B are used as direction setting pins. The D10 (channel A) and D11 (channel B) pins are used to adjust the motor speed.
  • There is one buzzer connected to the D4 pin. In this way, you can add functions such as a warning sound directly to your project without requiring external wiring.
  • In addition, there is a header connected to the D9 pin to which a servo motor connection can be made.
