     The Metal Sensor Probe 100mm is a SUS304 stainless steel protective sheath for temperature sensors, with a 1/2 inch thread and a plastic cable gland at the back. It can be used with temperature sensors such as Ds18b20, ntc and pt100. The 100mm long steel tube with 8mm outer diameter and 6mm inner diameter is open on one side and closed on the other; the sensor is slid from the back to the closed end of the tube. With its threaded structure of about 20mm diameter on the hexagon body, it is easily mounted into a 1/2 inch female port in a tank, boiler or pipe installation.

     It protects the sensor in high pressure or liquid-like environments that may damage the sensor, and in solar systems. With its durable and solid structure, it protects the sensor from external effects. At the back it has plastic parts that provide waterproofing; it seals by clamping the cable. It can be used by placing the sensor inside together with epoxy. Since the sensor can be removed without draining the installation, it allows a broken sensor to be replaced quickly.

Key features:

     1/2 inch threaded mounting: The 1/2 inch male thread with hexagon body is tightened with a wrench into a 1/2 inch female port or tee in a tank, boiler, water heater or pipe installation; sealing tape is wrapped on the thread.

     Plastic cable gland: The plastic gland at the back end clamps the sensor cable, prevents water entry and holds the cable in place. The plastic part withstands 80°C (100°C for a short time).

     Closed end tube with 6mm inner diameter: Sensors with an outer diameter smaller than 6mm (TO-92 packaged DS18B20 and LM35, thin NTC and PT100 tips) slide into the tube; the liquid does not touch the sensor, measurement is made through the steel tube.

     2MPa pressure rating: The steel sheath withstands up to 2MPa pressure; it protects the sensor in pressurized hot water installations.

     SUS304 stainless steel: The non-oxidizing steel tube with polished surface does not rust in water, hot water and humid environments; its strong structure protects against impacts.

Usage information:

• Measure the outer diameter of the sensor; it must be smaller than 6mm. Pass the sensor with its cable through the back gland, slide it to the closed end of the tube, then tighten the gland by hand to fix the cable.
• To improve heat transfer, you can put a small amount of thermal paste into the tube or place the sensor together with epoxy; if epoxy is used, the sensor cannot be replaced later.
• For mounting, wrap sealing tape on the thread and tighten the probe with a wrench on the hexagon into the 1/2 inch female port of the installation; place it so that the tube stays in the liquid to be measured.
• Connect the sensor cable to a thermostat, temperature controller or measurement board; the steel sheath and the air gap inside the tube add a delay to the measurement; thermal paste reduces this delay.

Things to consider:

•  The product is only a protective sheath, there is no sensor inside. The inner diameter is 6mm; ready-made sensors with a 6mm steel head fit tightly or do not fit, measure the sensor diameter before buying.
•  The operating temperature may show lower performance under high pressure and at the metal joints. The plastic gland withstands 80°C continuously (100°C for a short time); in hotter environments the gland and the sensor cable are damaged.
•  Do not exceed 2MPa pressure; the thread is 1/2 inch, do not force it into an M20 or other size port; BSP (G) and NPT threads do not fully match each other, check the thread type of the port.
•  It is a closed end tube; it is not suitable for humidity sensors (SHT, AHT, BME280 etc.). For humidity measurement use the Metal Sensor Housing with breathable sintered head.
