     It is an ethernet shield module manufactured in accordance with the Arduino reference circuit diagram, allowing Arduino boards to connect to the internet over wired ethernet. It uses the Wiznet W5100 ethernet IC. It is fully compatible with the Arduino ethernet library. All code and libraries written for the Arduino ethernet shield work flawlessly with this board.

     The module is used by plugging it directly onto the arduino board and requires no soldering. Thanks to the standard rj45 ethernet connector, it provides a fast and stable connection to local networks or the internet. It supports tcp and udp protocols and can establish 4 socket connections at the same time. It can work as a server or a client.

     The ethernet shield communicates with the arduino over the spi communication line. The W5100 ethernet IC and the sd card unit share the same spi lines. The chip select pin for the w5100 is pin 10, and the chip select pin for the sd card is pin 4. Only one unit can be active at a time, the unused unit must be set to the inactive state.

     There is a micro sd card slot on the board. The sd card can be used for operations such as file hosting, data recording and logging in web server applications. 

Thanks to the status leds on it, the connection and data traffic can be monitored instantly:

• PWR: Indicates that the board is powered
• LINK: Lights when the network connection is established, blinks during data exchange
• FULLD: Indicates that the connection is in full duplex mode
• 100M: Indicates that the network speed is 100Mbps
• RX: Blinks during data reception
• TX: Blinks during data transmission
• COLL: Lights in case of a network collision

     It is compatible with Arduino Uno, Mega and Duemilanove. On the Uno the spi pins are 11, 12, 13; on the Mega they are pins 50, 51, 52. Pin 10 is used for W5100 and pin 4 for sd card selection and they cannot be used as general purpose input output. Even though there is no hardware ss pin on Mega boards, the relevant pin must be set as output.
